The Australian federal police has determined One Nation leader Pauline Hanson\u2019s comments about Muslim Australians \u201cdo not meet the threshold\u201d of breaching hate laws.<\/p>\n

The AFP said it received several complaints about Hanson\u2019s remarks to Sky News on 16 February.<\/p>\n

As Hanson discussed attempts by Islamic State-linked Australian women and their children to return home<\/a> from Syria, she said: \u201cI\u2019ve got no time for radical Islam. Their religion concerns me because of what it says in the Qur\u2019an. They hate Westerners. That\u2019s what it\u2019s all about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou say, \u2018Well, there\u2019s good Muslims out there\u2019 \u2013 how can you tell me there are good Muslims?\u201d<\/p>\n

An AFP spokesperson said they had now finalised the matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn February 2026, the AFP received several complaints about public comments made by a federal parliamentarian,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe AFP has determined the comments do not meet the threshold for relevant offences, including within the Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism (Criminal and Migration Laws) Act 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

The government passed the combatting antisemitism and hate laws<\/a> in January, in the wake of the Bondi terror attack.<\/p>\n

The laws increased penalties for advocating or threatening force or violence, as well as creating a new listing for prohibited hate groups.<\/p>\n

Several days after Hanson\u2019s appearance on Sky News, Guardian Australia reported<\/a> that federal police claimed they had \u201creceived reports of a crime\u201d in relation to the comments.<\/p>\n

At the time, an AFP spokesperson did not say whether they had begun a criminal investigation.<\/p>\n

In response to that news, Hanson said: \u201cThey are trying to use Labor\u2019s new hate speech laws<\/a> to put me back in jail\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hanson did not withdraw her comments to Sky News, but offered further comments framed as a conditional apology after appearing in a series of media interviews in following days.<\/p>\n

Hanson told the ABC<\/a> she did not believe there are no \u201cgood\u201d Muslims and apologised if she had \u201coffended anyone out there that doesn\u2019t believe in sharia law, or multiple marriages, or wants to bring ISIS brides in, or people from Gaza that believe in a caliphate\u201d.<\/p>\n

In March, Hanson was censured in the Senate<\/a> over her Sky News comments, with the motion supported by Labor, the Greens, members of the crossbench, and two Liberal senators. Hanson called the censure motion \u2013 the second in four months against her \u2013 a \u201cstunt\u201d.<\/p>\n
