Though a No.10 pick in 2010, his 26 games for Gold Coast and Carlton fall well short of the mark.

As a player, his most memorable moment came in retirement when he clattered into comedian Dave Hughes in a legends charity match. But the world of social media does not follow the same rules, and there are few in Australian sport better at playing this game than Gorringe, who has a team of more than 10 full-timers and additional casual and part-time staff behind the scenes managing content and his commercial partnerships. His success is no accident.

The former ruckman has a greater digital presence than some clubs. His 378,000 followers on Instagram is well over double that of Gold Coast, the club that drafted him. His 43,200 subscribers on YouTube is close to 50 per cent higher than another of his former teams, Carlton, and his TikTok following of 298,000 is more than the Blues and Suns combined.

His average of more than 300,000 views and 20,000-plus engagements per content item across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube makes him “one of Australia’s highest-performing independent sports creator brands”, Nathan Powell, the chief product and strategy officer at AI-powered creator technology platform Fabulate, said.

“Dan has managed to build something that’s much harder than simply accumulating followers,” Powell said.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon with influencer Dan Gorringe, announcing the league’s first official watchalong.AFL

“He’s built a highly concentrated Australian sporting audience that consistently chooses to engage with his content. He’s authentic in his point of view, and he loves the game.”

Gorringe’s channel markets itself as “unfiltered and unqualified”. Lloyd and Matthews became entangled after their discussion of Docherty’s comments on 3AW, prompting Gorringe to label the former as a “dirty rat” and telling the latter to “f— up”.

There’s an element of lost in translation for the “dirty rat” reference. His audience relates to him because he reacts to the game the same way they do. That’s always been his personality, and it’s what has made the platform resonate.”

That perhaps does not do full justice to Gorringe’s knowledge of the game. In the Dockers v Swans watchalong, the former ruckman observed the return of the leaping rucks – a subject discussed in football media this year – and seconds later foreshadowed Charlie Curnow playing on and kicking a trademark long goal from a mark outside 50. Dan Does Footy works, not least because Dan does the work.

“There’s no secret to why he’s successful in this space. What is going on?”

The media rights landscape is constantly changing. UK YouTuber Mark Goldbridge, who hosts his own Manchester United fan channel, struck a deal with the Bundesliga to broadcast 20 games on one of his channels. Gorringe has similar aspirations.

“Absolutely. We’re constantly looking at what’s happening internationally,” Deal said. “Mark Goldbridge in Europe and Pat McAfee in the US have shown what’s possible when creators and rights holders work together.

“Australia has the opportunity to become a leader in that space as well. It demonstrated that creator broadcasts can sit alongside traditional coverage, enhance the fan experience and help grow engagement without taking anything away from the broadcast itself.”

The AFL is not ruling out Gorringe becoming a rights holder.

“You can never say never,” Haagsma said. “The future landscape is interesting.
