So rich in culture, home to more than 300 ancestries, and we share common ground with so many of the world\u2019s peoples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe are not a monoculture, and we have never been.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The Foreign Minister used the keynote address to argue Australia\u2019s Indigenous heritage and multicultural identity should be viewed as a national advantage rather than a point of division, saying they were central to how Australia engages with the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cForeign policy starts with who we are,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWhat we project to the world about who we are is an element of our national power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Senator Wong said First Nations people had connected Australia with neighbouring countries for centuries before European settlement through trade, diplomacy and cultural exchange, describing Indigenous Australians as the nation\u2019s \u201cfirst diplomats\u201d and \u201cfirst traders\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">She said those deep historical ties continued to strengthen Australia\u2019s relationships across the Pacific and Southeast Asia, pointing to agreements with Fiji, Vanuatu and Timor-Leste that have drawn on First Nations culture and leadership.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cc13bd795893212b8ef6c6f56aa52d8d86d5eefe.jpg\" alt=\"Penny Wong addressed Garma after Anthony Albanese pulled out.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Penny Wong addressed Garma after Anthony Albanese pulled out. Credit: AAP Photos<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cFirst Nations diplomacy is a source of strategic national advantage, which cannot be replicated or emulated,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9czhig-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The Foreign Minister also highlighted the Garma Festival\u2019s 2026 theme, Bukmak, describing it as a powerful reminder of Australia\u2019s shared future and the importance of bringing people together despite different backgrounds, cultures and beliefs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/b46e7bf8c41c941472f230838d40d64a06ce6325.jpg\" alt=\"Penny Wong attends the Garma Festival.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Penny Wong attends the Garma Festival.
