Gavin McKenna<\/a> has yet to play an NHL<\/a> game, but the Toronto Maple Leafs<\/a>\u2018 top prospect is already embracing the spotlight in Toronto. The 2026 No. 1 overall pick spoke enthusiastically about the city after spending time there this summer.<\/p>\n

Appearing on the \u201cJD Bunkis Podcast,\u201d McKenna reflected on his first experience with Toronto during the World Cup festivities. \u201cI got a little taste of what it\u2019s like there, what the city\u2019s like, what the people are like, and the fans and stuff,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I was there, it was awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 18-year-old admitted the summer has been demanding but rewarding. \u201cI\u2019m very grateful for all these opportunities that I\u2019ve been getting,\u201d McKenna said. \u201cNot a lot of kids would be able to say they\u2019re having the summer that I\u2019m having.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toronto\u2019s passionate fan base also left an early impression.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fans, they were approaching me, and they were all awesome about it,\u201d McKenna said. \u201cThere\u2019s a buzz around the city. They\u2019re excited for next year and the Leafs, and I\u2019m glad to be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gavin McKenna arrives as centerpiece of Toronto\u2019s new era<\/p>\n

McKenna\u2019s excitement matches the organization\u2019s expectations. The Maple Leafs won the 2026 Draft Lottery despite only 8.5 percent odds and selected the Penn State star first overall after he recorded 51 points in 35 NCAA games.<\/p>\n

Earlier this summer, McKenna outlined his goal during an appearance on SportsCenter<\/a>. \u201cI think I\u2019m a player who makes all the players around me better,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ll do whatever it takes to win a Stanley Cup. That\u2019s all I want, to win a Stanley Cup in Toronto.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those comments reflect confidence without ignoring the challenge ahead. Toronto finished last in the Atlantic Division after a disappointing 2025-26 season and responded with major front-office and roster changes. General manager John Chayka added veterans while keeping Auston Matthews<\/a> and William Nylander as the team\u2019s foundation.<\/p>\n

McKenna is expected to play meaningful minutes immediately, possibly alongside Matthews. His playmaking ability and maturity should strengthen Toronto\u2019s top six from opening night.<\/p>\n

The attention surrounding Toronto can overwhelm young players. McKenna, however, already appears comfortable with the pressure.
