{"id":838157,"date":"2026-08-01T17:01:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T17:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/838157\/"},"modified":"2026-08-01T17:01:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T17:01:21","slug":"commonwealth-games-jye-dixon-breaks-australias-boxing-gold-medal-drought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/838157\/","title":{"rendered":"Commonwealth Games: Jye Dixon breaks Australia\u2019s Boxing gold medal drought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Australia\u2019s wait for a Commonwealth boxing champion is over, with Jye Dixon stepping up in the Bantamweight final as Jacob Cassar claimed silver in the very next bout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Australia had not tasted gold in the ring since the nation\u2019s home Games on the Gold Coast in 2018, when Harry Garside claimed glory in the 60kg weight division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">And it looked like the green and gold would have to wait a little longer as a split decision gave the first round to Dixon\u2019s Indian opponent, J.S. Mandengbam, against the flow of the fight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">However, the 21-year-old\u2019s elite timing on the counter came to the fore, and as the Indian young gun continued to walk into Dixon\u2019s left hand, he was able to take control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Mandengbam started the third and final round with a brilliant flurry of combinations that broke the Aussie\u2019s guard and landed a huge blow to the face, but Dixon fired back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">He didn\u2019t look nearly as good going toe-to-toe with his Indian foe, but as soon as he reverted to striking off the back foot, he regained control, taking a unanimous victory on the scorecards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Dixon went through the competition the hard way, having to win three fights to make the final, including a semifinal over Ghana\u2019s Mohammed Amadu, while some only had to fight twice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Cassar appeared outclassed from the moment he entered the ring against Russian-Born English fighter Patris Mughalzai.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/43b8a8a4bea3669c43fea8db63c64f24992ab8aa.jpg\" alt=\"Jye Dixon of Team Australia walks out for the Men's 55kg Final Bout against Jadumani Singh Mandengbam.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconJye Dixon of Team Australia walks out for the Men&#8217;s 55kg Final Bout against Jadumani Singh Mandengbam.
