Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won Sri Lanka’s first ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in men’s\u00a0javelin on Friday (31 July), beating a stacked athletics<\/a> field to claim the title at the\u00a0Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.<\/p>\n

Former fast bowler Pathirage secured the win with a throw of 89.75m to finish\u00a0ahead of the Tokyo 2020<\/a> Olympic champion,\u00a0Neeraj Chopra<\/a> on 85.83m, while\u00a0Yash Vir Singh, also of india, claimed bronze with a throw of 85.41m.<\/p>\n

Paris 2024<\/a> bronze medallist Anderson Peters<\/a> of Grenada finished just off the podium in fourth (83.88m) while the showdown with reigning Olympic champion,\u00a0Arshad Nadeem<\/a>, failed to materialise as the Pakistan athlete finished ninth (77.41m).<\/p>\n

Pathirage’s success marked the first gold medal won by a Sri\u00a0Lankan athlete at the Commonwealth Games since weightlifter\u00a0Chinthana Vidanage<\/a> topped the podium at the 2006 Melbourne Games.<\/p>\n

“I’m incredibly happy to bring the first javelin gold medal to Sri Lanka,” he told reporters in the mixed zone.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Bringing this gold medal means everything to me, and I’m proud to hear our national anthem played as I stood on the podium for Sri Lanka.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Athletes from South Asia have dominated the event at recent editions of the Commonwealth Games, with Chopra winning the event at Gold Coast 2018 and Nadeem doing the same at Birmingham 2022.<\/p>\n

Both athletes went on to become Olympic champions at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020<\/a> and Paris 2024<\/a>, respectively. And while there’s no hard science to back up the trend, it’s hard not to consider\u00a0Pathirage a genuine medal contender when it comes to LA 2028.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Still, he remained focused on his own throwing for the time being, seeking to control the variables he can in a event as technically difficult as javelin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“To be very honest, the weather conditions were very tough for us,” he\u00a0said of competing inside the windy Scotstoun Stadium.\u00a0“But I tried to throw my own distance rather than trying to match other people’s distances.”<\/p>\n

A clearly talented javelin thrower, Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage is also an IOC scholarship holder.\u00a0Through monthly grants, Olympic Solidarity scholarships help athletes cover costs linked to training, equipment, travel and qualification competitions, giving athletes from all backgrounds an equal opportunity to prepare for and succeed at the Olympic Games.\u00a0<\/p>\n
