It’s been a three year wait, but ITV’s Amsterdam-set crime drama Van der Valk is finally back on our screens tonight for its fourth season. The first episode of the new run kicks off at 8pm on ITV1.<\/p>\n

Starring Hustle and Big Boys’ Marc Warren, the show is a reboot of a show that ran between 1972 to 1992 and was based on Nicolas Freeling’s novels of the same name.<\/p>\n

The plot follows Commissaris Piet Van der Valk and his team in the National Police Force’s major crimes division in the Dutch capital city, with season 4 focusing on some of their toughest cases yet.<\/p>\n

The first episode of the season sees a witness killed while in police protection, and not only is an officer the number one suspect, but said officer is a one of Van der Valk’s former love interests.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Radio Times<\/a>, Warren stated: “That’s a real shock for Van der Valk.<\/p>\n

“She’s very involved in the crime that we’re investigating to the point where I actually think she might be complicit in it, and I sort of accuse her of actually having done it.<\/p>\n

“But as with any old relationship, it just throws him. So where he’s normally quite cool and on it, he’s completely thrown and you see that vulnerable side of him.”<\/p>\n

Although season 4 is only now premiering in the UK, it actually first aired in Denmark over two years ago, and was shown in the United States and Australia later in 2024.<\/p>\n

That does mean that there are fan reviews of the season already (via Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>), with one reading: “The original Van Der Valk was one of the best and most popular British detective series of the 1970s… These reboots are worthy successors… one of the best police procedurals on TV.”<\/p>\n

Van der Valk returns to ITV1 tonight and streams on ITVX.<\/p>\n
