{"id":840439,"date":"2026-08-02T20:08:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T20:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/840439\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T20:08:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T20:08:12","slug":"rare-gobi-desert-fossil-rewrites-mammal-evolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/840439\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare Gobi Desert fossil rewrites mammal evolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A rabbit-shaped skeleton from Mongolia just settled an old argument about a group of extinct mammals.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, scientists knew this group only from its teeth, and those teeth kept pointing to the wrong branch of the mammal family tree. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthsnap.onelink.me\/3u5Q\/ags2loc4\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fit-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/earthsnap-banner-news.webp\" alt=\"EarthSnap\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A newly described fossil says otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Known only from scattered teeth<\/p>\n<p>Paleontologists call the group zhelestids. For most of the last 40 years, all anyone had were scattered teeth and a few broken jaw pieces. <\/p>\n<p>Those teeth were low, rounded, and built more for grinding plants than the sharp, pointed teeth found in most other mammals from the same era. That one clue was enough to start a long-running argument.<\/p>\n<p>The new fossil comes from a team at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">American Museum of Natural History<\/a>, Stony Brook University, the University of Arizona, and Arcadia University.<\/p>\n<p>Study lead author Andres Giallombardo found the specimen in Mongolia\u2019s Gobi Desert in 2004, while he was a graduate student on a museum-sponsored expedition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the thrill of a career to find a new species so completely preserved that also solves a longstanding scientific problem, and a reminder that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/gobi-desert-had-lakes-vegetation-and-human-camps-just-8000-years-ago\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gobi Desert<\/a>, which is well known for fossils, continues to change science,\u201d said Giallombardo.<\/p>\n<p>Teeth pointed to the wrong branch<\/p>\n<p>The rounded teeth led some researchers to guess that zhelestids were an early branch of hoofed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/scientists-think-this-is-the-first-plant-eating-land-animal-tyrannoroter-heberti\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plant-eating<\/a> mammals.<\/p>\n<p>Others went further, suggesting zhelestids were some of the earliest placental mammals, the group that today includes humans, dogs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/humpback-whales-blow-bubble-smoke-rings-near-humans-to-communicate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whales<\/a>, and most living animals. <\/p>\n<p>Genetic studies of living animals, which estimate how far back different mammal lines split by comparing their DNA, have long suggested that placental mammals go back far enough to have lived alongside dinosaurs. <\/p>\n<p>A fossil placental mammal from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/extraordinary-dinosaur-fossils-discovered-from-the-end-of-cretaceous-era\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cretaceous<\/a> would back that idea up with a body, not just a calculation.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Velazco, a comparative biologist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcadia.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Arcadia University<\/a> and a co-author on the study, said the two kinds of evidence do different jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMolecular models based on living animals can predict the past, but fossils provide the evidence needed to test those predictions,\u201d noted Velazco.<\/p>\n<p>A skeleton the teeth never predicted<\/p>\n<p>The new species, named Tamirkhan balcarceli, still has the low, rounded teeth that define zhelestids. <\/p>\n<p>But it also has long front incisors that never stop growing, plus a set of skull features that match a very different group: small, shrew-like insect-eaters called zalambdalestoids. Its back legs settled the question.<\/p>\n<p>Shawn Zack, a paleontologist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arizona.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">University of Arizona<\/a> and co-author of the study, said the hind limbs left no doubt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTamirkhan\u2019s hind legs are long and slender with distinctive ankles, traits that are unmistakably zalambdalestoid,\u201d Zack noted.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the whole skeleton, the team now places zhelestids inside the zalambdalestoid group rather than anywhere near placental mammals.<\/p>\n<p>One tooth cannot describe a body<\/p>\n<p>The rounded teeth were not evidence of a close relationship to hoofed mammals after all. They were a case of convergent evolution, where unrelated animals develop similar features because they eat similar food.<\/p>\n<p>Maureen O\u2019Leary is a paleontologist at Stony Brook University and a research associate at the museum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than 200 years ago, French naturalist Georges Cuvier famously argued that a single tooth could allow scientists to predict the anatomy of an entire animal,\u201d said O\u2019Leary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile teeth remain among the most informative fossils available, this work demonstrates that teeth cannot always tell us how the whole animal looked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A body plan like rabbits<\/p>\n<p>Tamirkhan measured 6 to 7 inches (15 to 18 centimeters) from head to tail, about the length of a new pencil. <\/p>\n<p>Its long hind legs gave it a hopping, rabbit-like build, even though real <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/how-do-domestic-rabbits-thrive-in-the-wild\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rabbits<\/a> would not show up for tens of millions of years. <\/p>\n<p>Paleontologists have nicknamed zhelestids \u201cCretaceous rabbits\u201d for exactly that reason. They copied a body plan nature had not invented yet.<\/p>\n<p>Surprises from the Gobi desert<\/p>\n<p>Complete zhelestid skeletons are rare.
