The high-profile trial of former broadcaster Alan Jones<\/a> for indecent assault and sexual touching charges begins on Monday in Sydney\u2019s Downing Centre local court and is expected to run for four months and hear from 76 witnesses.<\/p>\n

Judge Glenn Walsh will hear from six complainants who were allegedly indecently assaulted by the 85-year-old between 2003 and 2020.<\/p>\n

Jones is facing 22 charges at his judge-alone trial. They include 20 indecent assault and two sexual touching charges, the court was told in pre-trial hearings last month. In 2018 the offence of indecent assault was replaced by sexual touching, carrying a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment.<\/p>\n

The youngest complainant, who was 17 at the time of the alleged offending, is giving evidence in camera \u2013 presented in a closed courtroom \u2013 on Monday after the delivery of opening statements by the prosecution and the defence.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Walsh knocked back an attempt by the defence to prevent media reporting the evidence of complainants.<\/p>\n

Jones\u2019s barrister Claire O\u2019Neill argued that under the criminal procedure act, in-camera evidence was not permitted to be published. <\/p>\n

But Walsh did not agree, saying he wasn\u2019t satisfied in-camera meant \u201ca non-publication or suppression order\u201d. <\/p>\n

He also said Complainant J was not \u201cfussed\u201d by media reporting his evidence. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Complainant J doesn\u2019t seem to be jumping up for the crown to say no, but the defendant is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Complainant J is anonymised in line with the right of all alleged victims of sexual offences to maintain their privacy. The court heard in pre-trial arguments Complainant J, whose case accounts for nine of the 22 charges, told police he met Jones as a young man and was given a mobile phone by the then 2GB breakfast host, who invited him to visit his Macquarie Street apartment.<\/p>\n

Jones is alleged to have put his arms around Complainant J at the apartment, and give him a \u201csqueeze\u201d and a \u201cpeck\u201d on the mouth while saying \u201cI love you mate\u201d.<\/p>\n

The court has heard that Jones allegedly touched Complainant J\u2019s penis while he was driving him to Fitzroy Falls in the NSW southern highlands.<\/p>\n

The prosecution case is that there is a pattern of alleged behaviour by Jones involving the targeting of \u201csignificantly younger men\u201d in his professional and social circle.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors told the court last month in pre-trial that it is \u201cimprobable\u201d that two similar accounts of Jones allegedly touching a complainant\u2019s penis while driving would be \u201cuntrue\u201d. Each complainant was driving a car and there was \u201cno reciprocity prior to the touching\u201d, the court heard.<\/p>\n

Two of the six complainants told police they were assaulted on the first occasion they met Jones: one at a fashion show and one at a fundraising meeting.<\/p>\n

Jones has denied all wrongdoing and said the allegations are all either baseless or they distort the truth.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have never indecently assaulted these people,\u201d he said outside court in December 2024. \u201cThe law assumes that I am not guilty, and I am not guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n
