This summer will see thousands of young people in the UK<\/a> graduate from architecture<\/a> school, but reports suggest that they will find it tougher than ever to land a job afterwards.<\/p>\n

“The industry is fundamentally broken”<\/p>\n

Reports rang true with Dezeen readers. For Geoff<\/a>, “the architecture industry and architectural education have been too long detached from one another.”<\/p>\n

“The industry, for me, is fundamentally broken,” they stated. “The RIBA and RIAS seem to fiddle away on peripheral issues while Rome burns.”<\/p>\n

This sentiment was echoed by commenter Anon<\/a>, who wrote, “the system feels deeply flawed.” They went on to suggest that “it’s time for changes that ensure architecture schools provide practical training needed for the professional practice.”<\/p>\n

Commenter Toni<\/a> agreed, proposing that “unfortunately, being an architect isn’t worth it anymore.” They reflected that “what we do and learn in architecture school is amazing, but it has nothing to do with what’s done in practice.”<\/p>\n

“Such ‘design’ should not be encouraged”<\/p>\n

Readers were undecided about the addition of two brick extensions to a terraced house in Melbourne<\/a>, designed by Matt Gibson Architecture + Design<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Absolutely adore the interiors and gardens,” said Chris<\/a>. But ultimately, they felt “the roof choice seems like an overstretch.”<\/p>\n

Henri<\/a> was similarly torn. “I like the brickwork and how continuous it is, but I’m not so sure on the shape, especially that roof,” they wrote.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Karl<\/a> argued “bricks are not intended to be on roofs.” They suggested that “this design is a long-term maintenance nightmare,” before concluding “such ‘design’ should not be encouraged.”<\/p>\n

Also splitting opinion this week was\u00a0a cafe inside the 19th-century town hall of Arzignano<\/a> that combines original details and bespoke elements, created by architecture studio AMAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Commenter Jb<\/a> was impressed. “True architectural respect is rare,” they wrote before saying “well done on enhancing the extant architecture without compromising current design sensibilities.”<\/p>\n

“Finally, a project that’s contemporary and appropriately designed,” acknowledged Winterberg<\/a>. “How exciting intelligent design can be.”<\/p>\n

However, other commenters took a more blunt view. “I’m sorry, but the seating area with the extended bench looks cramped and like an old bus or train terminal waiting area,” commented Marc S<\/a>.<\/p>\n
