The spacecraft&#8217;s name stands for the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging mission.<\/p>\n<p>It blasted off on a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41961-delta-ii-rocket.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41961-delta-ii-rocket.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41961-delta-ii-rocket.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Delta II rocket<\/a> that launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 6:15 a.m. Eastern Time and spent the next six and a half years making its way to Mercury&#8217;s orbit. Because Mercury is so close to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a>, a spacecraft travelling toward the planet speeds up as the sun&#8217;s gravity pulls it in.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-6e436690-8f43-11f1-933b-2dbfec6b6bb4-2\">In order to slow down enough to avoid falling into the sun, MESSENGER utilized the gravitational pull of Venus and Mercury <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/3887-messenger-flyby-venus-dress-rehearsal-mercury.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/3887-messenger-flyby-venus-dress-rehearsal-mercury.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/3887-messenger-flyby-venus-dress-rehearsal-mercury.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with multiple flybys<\/a> along the way. It is close to the sun, yet holds the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27450-messenger-mercury-water-ice-photos.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27450-messenger-mercury-water-ice-photos.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27450-messenger-mercury-water-ice-photos.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">promise of water ice<\/a> on its surface. It completes one orbit every 88 days. But it can be a devil of a planet to reach with a spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>The launch of NASA&#8217;s MESSENGER spacecraft was the first step to bring the rocky, craggy Mercury within tantalizing reach of scientists hoping for an upclose look at the planet. The spacecraft made some surprising discoveries, revealing that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/14978-mercury-discoveries-messenger-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/14978-mercury-discoveries-messenger-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/14978-mercury-discoveries-messenger-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mercury&#8217;s core is huge<\/a> \u2014 roughly 85% of its radius (Earth&#8217;s core is only 50% of its own radius). The planet is also very flat, with less elevation changes than those found on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth&#8217;s moon<\/a> and Mars. MESSENGER&#8217;s greatest finds may have been extremely &#8220;radar-bright&#8221; deposits in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38274-mercury-has-surprisingly-icy-north-pole.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38274-mercury-has-surprisingly-icy-north-pole.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38274-mercury-has-surprisingly-icy-north-pole.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">craters at Mercury&#8217;s poles<\/a>, which are in permanent darkness and may hold pockets of water ice.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>MESSENGER&#8217;s primary mission at Mercury <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/13655-mercury-spacecraft-messenger-mission-extension.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/13655-mercury-spacecraft-messenger-mission-extension.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/13655-mercury-spacecraft-messenger-mission-extension.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ended in 2012<\/a> and its mission was extended twice. In 2015, NASA ended the MESSENGER mission by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29281-messenger-spacecraft-mercury-crash.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29281-messenger-spacecraft-mercury-crash.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29281-messenger-spacecraft-mercury-crash.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">crashing the probe into Mercury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A new spacecraft is now headed for Mercury.
