A former prison worker has been found guilty of the rape and aggravated indecent assault of a female inmate at an Adelaide jail.<\/p>\n

Enio Screpanti, 67, stood trial in South Australia’s District Court for four days after pleading not guilty to the offences, which occurred in the early 2020s.<\/p>\n

After just over two hours of deliberations, the 12-person jury delivered unanimous guilty verdicts to the charges.<\/p>\n

Screpanti’s family became audibly and visibly emotional as the jury’s verdicts were read aloud.<\/p>\n

After the verdicts, prosecutor Christine Hanna asked the court to revoke Screpanti’s bail due to the seriousness of the offending.<\/p>\n

Screpanti’s defence barrister Gilbert Aitken opposed the application, but Judge Anne Barnett said it was appropriate Screpanti be remanded in custody and revoked his bail.<\/p>\n

In closing submissions earlier on Monday, Ms Hanna had told the jury the victim was a “credible and reliable witness”.<\/p>\n

The jury previously heard Screpanti sexually assaulted the woman on a treadmill in the prison gym before raping her several months later<\/a> after asking “[her] to come to a shed as they had a job to do”.<\/p>\n

Convicted murderer, and fellow inmate, Nicole McGuinness also gave evidence in the trial<\/a> about uncharged acts that were brought before the court to give context to the charged offending.<\/p>\n

“On the prosecution case that evidence still has a part to play in your [the jury] consideration and deliberations on the charged acts,” Ms Hanna said in her closing address.<\/p>\n

“It might also help you to understand that the alleged charged acts did not come out of the blue.”<\/p>\n

In his closing submissions on Monday, Mr Aitken stated there was no CCTV vision of the incident and had told the jury the victim’s evidence was “less than satisfactory”.<\/p>\n
