(ABC News: Ebony ten Broeke)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The new leader was quick to stick to his predecessor&#8217;s line that Labor is the &#8220;party of jobs and opportunities&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-21\/who-is-josh-willie-new-tasmanian-labor-leader\/105678508\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Who is Josh Willie, new leader of Tasmanian Labor<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Joshua Barton Willie, a 41-year-old former primary school teacher, is the new leader of Tasmanian Labor \u2014 tasked with trying to engineer a party comeback after yet another election loss to the Liberals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, he was careful to point out that it was &#8220;also the party of education and health and housing&#8221;, areas that have received little mention over the past 16 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The Labor Party under my leadership will be focused on jobs and opportunity, but also the things that Tasmanians care about, those core Labor issues of healthcare, cost of living, housing and education,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It was something he kept coming back to throughout the presser, even saying the party needed to &#8220;differentiate ourselves from the Liberals&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tasmanian Labor has always supported traditional industries and that won&#8217;t change, but through my leadership you&#8217;ll see us talking more broadly across the economy,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Jobs in the services industry, for example, in education and healthcare, talking about the Tasmanian success story that is tourism and hospitality or new industries like start-up and tech.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, he ruled out walking away from the party&#8217;s commitments to the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-09\/tas-liberal-government-greyhound-racing-funding-end\/105632818\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105632818\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">greyhound racing <\/a>and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-17\/tasmanian-salmon-industry-expansion-pause-as-review-ordered\/105663820\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105663820\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">salmon industries<\/a>., which the Liberals have made concessions on to appease the progressive crossbench.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We won&#8217;t be walking away from our commitments, like the premier has,&#8221; Mr Willie said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a very poor process that has played out here. We need to earn the trust of Tasmanians and we need to do the hard work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We need to spend time across the regions of Tasmania, listening to the Tasmanians that might not have voted for us this time and understand why.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Willie scathing of crossbench support of Liberals<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Willie would not be drawn on whether the first no-confidence motion was a mistake, simply saying there was &#8220;no shortcut to government&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-20\/election-worst-labor-result-ever-but-still-a-chance-analysis\/105550998\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Horrible night for Tasmanian Labor<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Labor faithful, hoping Tasmanian voters were ready for a change after 11 years of Liberal rule, have had a rude awakening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He gave that same answer when asked if he would rule out another no-confidence motion in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">During his recent no-confidence speech, Mr Willie was scathing of <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-19\/live-blog-tas-no-confidence-rockliff-parliament-motion-voting\/105671754\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105671754\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the crossbench for its decision to side with the Liberal government<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Since becoming leader, he said a number of crossbench members had reached out to wish him luck and that they were looking forward to working with him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They could&#8217;ve chosen a Labor government, but they chose a Liberal government and I think they do need to take some responsibility for that moving forward,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That said, I&#8217;m open to collaboration where we can. There&#8217;s some obvious areas where we have things in common with the crossbench.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We want to see greater transparency and integrity in government.
