Join now and get your first month for just $1.<\/a><\/p>\n RELOCATION FEARS GROW IN PORTLAND<\/p>\n The Portland Trail Blazers could be entering the biggest crossroads in franchise history, with growing concerns the team could eventually relocate under new owner Tom Dundon if a long-term arena agreement cannot be reached.<\/p>\n Just months after the NBA approved Dundon\u2019s $4.25 billion purchase of the franchise on March 30, serious questions have emerged over Portland\u2019s ability to keep the Trail Blazers in the city.<\/p>\n Those concerns have only intensified following reports that negotiations between the franchise and the City of Portland over a proposed $573 million (A$817 million) renovation of Moda Center have stalled.<\/p>\n Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon is facing growing pressure to reach a long-term agreement with the City of Portland over the future of Moda Center.Source: AP<\/p>\n According to reports this week, talks between the two parties \u201cdidn\u2019t go well\u201d, with the city and the Trail Blazers still significantly apart on how the arena redevelopment should be funded.<\/p>\n Should an agreement fail to materialise before August 12, speculation surrounding the franchise\u2019s long-term future is expected to escalate rapidly.<\/p>\n The uncertainty has already become a major talking point across the NBA, with respected insiders Brian Windhorst and Bill Simmons both publicly discussing the possibility of relocation.<\/p>\n The situation first gained traction less than three months into Dundon\u2019s ownership when he questioned the financial viability of remaining in Portland.<\/p>\n \u201cIt feels like we\u2019re making a pretty big investment by staying here and paying these tax rates,\u201d Dundon said.<\/p>\n Windhorst believes Portland remains a realistic home for the franchise but stopped well short of suggesting the Trail Blazers are guaranteed to stay.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s realistic but it\u2019s definitely not a done deal,\u201d Windhorst said.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen the Allen estate sold the team, they did a very short lease. Leases are usually 15 to 20 years, they did a five-year lease and there\u2019s almost no protection in the lease for the Blazers to leave.<\/p>\n \u201cTom Dundon isn\u2019t interested in giving any money for this renovation and it\u2019s a messy one.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite the growing speculation, Windhorst believes two of the most commonly linked destinations can effectively be ruled out.<\/p>\n \u201cThe last thing I want you to know, earlier this year Adam Silver said relocation in the NBA is not on the table,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cBut as you know the NBA is looking to expand to Las Vegas and Seattle. Those would be the two markets you\u2019d want to move a team to.<\/p>\n \u201cBut that\u2019s not going to be allowed by the NBA owners. They want to expand there and get seven to eight billion dollars for the expansion fee.<\/p>\n \u201cSeattle and Las Vegas are not options.\u201d<\/p>\n If those expansion markets are unavailable, Simmons believes another city looms as a genuine threat.<\/p>\n \u201cFirst of all, Kansas City can make an argument they maybe should have a team,\u201d Simmons said.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019ve really grown, they have a state-of-the-art arena, they\u2019ve hosted big events and I think the city\u2019s grown. They\u2019re in a part of the country the NBA doesn\u2019t really have.<\/p>\n \u201cI think they\u2019d help with conference alignment.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd what\u2019s dangerous about Kansas City is they\u2019ll take any team.<\/p>\n \u201cPortland\u2019s not moving to Seattle.<\/p>\n \u201cSeattle doesn\u2019t want the Trail Blazers. They have a long rivalry and a history, and they know what it\u2019s like when you lose a team.
