{"id":842880,"date":"2026-08-04T05:50:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T05:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/842880\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T05:50:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T05:50:14","slug":"grove-racing-matt-payne-on-cusp-of-supercars-repco-sprint-cup-trophy-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/842880\/","title":{"rendered":"Grove Racing, Matt Payne on cusp of Supercars Repco Sprint Cup trophy win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GROVE Racing is on the cusp of clinching its latest major slice of Supercars silverware.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having left Perth with a 118-point buffer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/stats-driver-1545-Broc-Feeney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Broc Feeney<\/a> atop the drivers\u2019 championship, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/stats-driver-2716-Matt-Payne\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Payne<\/a> is very much in the box seat to win the Repco Sprint Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just one round remains in the Sprint Cup phase of the season, the Ipswich Super440 across August 21-23.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a maximum of 315 points available at Queensland Raceway, the simple math is that Payne will clinch the trophy if he accumulates at least 198 points across Round 9.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RGP-2026-Bosch-PowerTools-Perth-S440-_25A2988-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-261156\"  \/>The Repco Sprint Cup trophy. Pic: Ross Gibb<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That number, of course, will reduce if Feeney doesn\u2019t score maximum points in any race (i.e. the win and fastest lap bonus points).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are various ways Payne can accumulate 198 points at Ipswich, the simplest of which is by finishing sixth in all three races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt this stage we only have to execute well at Queensland Raceway and Matt should be the Sprint Cup champion,\u201d said Stephen Grove.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are times when things are out of your control, but the cars and good and if we execute well then it shouldn\u2019t be a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/superstore.v8sleuth.com.au\/products\/v8-sleuth-magazine-issue-5?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=buy-button&amp;utm_content=buy-button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/sleuth-mag-issue-5-2.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grove Racing last year got its hands on several major gongs, winning the Repco Bathurst 1000, Ryco Enduro Cup and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/stats-driver-88-Jason-Richards\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Richards<\/a> Memorial Trophy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feeney won the inaugural Sprint Cup in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt least we know a Ford will win the Sprint Cup. Hopefully it is one of ours,\u201d said Triple Eight team manager Mark Dutton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/stats-driver-58-Cam-Waters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cam Waters<\/a> is the only other driver in mathematical contention, but is an extreme long shot given he is 277 points adrift of Payne.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"GROVE Racing is on the cusp of clinching its latest major slice of Supercars silverware.
