Who are the most improved NRL players in 2026?<\/a><\/p>\nPretty clearly much of it centres on her presentation rather than her performance – critics have zeroed in on her fashion choices, social media presence and modelling background, suggesting she doesn\u2019t fit the traditional mould of a rugby league broadcaster (whatever that even is in 2026).<\/p>\n
This echoes the experiences of another NRL presenter, Tiffany Salmond, who also faced considerable scrutiny over her appearance before disappearing from the game\u2019s TV screens in 2024 – a situation that ignited uncomfortable and prolonged debate around how female media talent is received, and portrayed, in the professional sporting landscape.<\/p>\n
Grace Hayden hasn\u2019t entered uncharted territory in joining Fox League. The pay TV broadcaster already features the excellent Yvonne Sampson and Lara Pitt, while Nine\u2019s coverage includes Emma Lawrence, Danika Mason and Allana Ferguson.<\/p>\n
Women reporting on the NRL is well established, and growing, so the intensity of scrutiny aimed specifically at Hayden again raises the question of whether this is really about broadcasting standards, or something else entirely.<\/p>\n
Is it fair? Critics might argue any new hire invites scrutiny of their credentials be they male or female.<\/p>\n
Is it confused? Quite possibly. Much of the criticism appears to blur Hayden\u2019s off-air image with her on-air competence, two completely different things.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Is it sexism? Plenty of people think so, pointing out that the game\u2019s male broadcasters (not to mention players) rarely face the same kind of commentary about their appearance or social media presences.<\/p>\n
