AFL<\/a> boss Andrew Dillon says Snoop Dogg will put on a \u201cfamily friendly\u201d show at the grand final, after the league came under fire for apparent double standards this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Adelaide Crows star Izak Rankine has copped a four-match ban<\/a> for what the AFL described as a \u201chighly offensive homophobic slur\u201d \u2014 a word that also happens to appear in a song from Snoop Dogg\u2019s prolific rap career.<\/p>\n

The situation hit the front pages of newspapers this week and was even informally raised by Adelaide during the AFL investigation.<\/p>\n

While Snoop was always going to stick to his hits at the MCG, Dillon opted to address the issue in a press conference on Thursday after announcing Rankine\u2019s ban.<\/p>\n

He backed the 53-year-old rapper during his prepared statement prior to taking questions on Rankine.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot vouch for every lyric in every song ever written or performed by any artist who has or will appear on our stage, Australian or international,\u201d Dillon said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what I can say is our pre-match entertainment on grand final day will be family friendly and consistent with the audience at the MCG and those watching the broadcast.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is also important to remember that we have engaged Snoop Dogg in 2025 as the person he is today.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has spoken publicly about his past.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has changed, and today he\u2019s a grandfather, philanthropist, he helps rehabilitate youth and he\u2019s a global entertainer who has performed at both the Super Bowl and the Olympic closing ceremony to audiences of more than 100 million people.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn those environments his performance was appropriate and well received, and his performance this year at our grand final will be fitting for the best sporting event in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Snoop performed Drop It Like It\u2019s Hot during the Paris Olympics\u2019 handover to Los Angeles last year.<\/p>\n

Dillon this month joked he had a different favourite hit.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, there\u2019s so many, it\u2019s hard to choose (laughs) … I\u2019m more a Gin and Juice man,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Both songs could need minor changes to their lyrics in the wake of Dillon\u2019s \u2018family friendly\u2019 declaration.<\/p>\n

The AFL boss also teased special guests could appear alongside Snoop, who brought out Dr Dre in Paris after performing with the iconic producer, Eminem, Mary J Blige, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent at the 2022 Super Bowl.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is well known for his collaborations, so there might be a little more to see here,\u201d Dillon added in his radio interview.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Dillon on Thursday said the AFL will continue to educate players.<\/p>\n

Rankine is the sixth player to be suspended for a homophobic slur in the past 16 months.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlayers get taunted, players get provoked, but there is a line and that line\u2019s been crossed too many times,\u201d Dillon said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think this (cracking down on abuse) has been a key pillar of what the AFL has been about since long before my time here.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve led the way on that, so it\u2019s really disappointing and it\u2019s unacceptable. It\u2019s not good enough. We want to work with the playing group to eradicate it.\u201d<\/p>\n

7NEWS Melbourne\u2019s Mitch Cleary then asked how much more education players have received this year after the AFL first took a stronger stance in 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cHave you got tangible evidence on how much they\u2019ve actually done?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Dillon replied: \u201cDifferent education modules have been put in place. But ultimately it\u2019s just continued awareness. As I said, it\u2019s just not good enough and it needs to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n
