At least four people have died after a horror head-on crash on a remote highway in the Northern Territory.<\/a><\/p>\n

Emergency services were called after reports two cars collided head-on while driving along the Stuart Highway near the Marrakai Road turn-off, south-east of Darwin, on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

When emergency services arrived, they found both cars fully engulfed in flames and there were no survivors.<\/p>\n

A section of the highway remains closed as Major Crash detectives investigate the circumstances of the devastating collision.<\/p>\n

\u201cDue to the severity of the crash, which appears to have been a high-speed head-on collision, both vehicles caught fire, making this an extremely complex investigation,\u201d Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Schumacher said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this stage, we have confirmed at least four people have died. <\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, due to the extent of the damage, we are still working to formally identify the deceased and determine whether there were any additional occupants in either vehicle.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne vehicle, believed to be a goods van, contains one deceased person. The second vehicle, a dual-cab utility, contains three confirmed deceased.\u201d<\/p>\n

Traffic diversions remain in place. Heavy vehicles are unable to pass through the area while light vehicles are being offered a detour.<\/p>\n

Motorists are urged to avoid the area or expect significant delays if passing through.<\/p>\n
