{"id":844682,"date":"2026-08-05T18:06:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T18:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/844682\/"},"modified":"2026-08-05T18:06:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T18:06:12","slug":"suns-swirling-surface-captured-in-spectacular-detail-by-worlds-largest-solar-telescope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/844682\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun&#8217;s swirling surface captured in spectacular detail by world&#8217;s largest solar telescope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Sun&#8217;s surface is constantly churning with hot, glowing plasma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Those swirling eddies play a huge role in the Sun&#8217;s occasional violent outbursts, but they&#8217;re difficult to see because it is so bright.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Now astronomers have used the world&#8217;s largest solar telescope to capture the highest-resolution imagery ever taken of our star&#8217;s roiling surface.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It shows a section of the Sun about 5,000 by 3,500 kilometres in size: a zone that, on Earth, could comfortably enclose mainland Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The stunning imagery also captures a never-before-seen physical process, which the researchers have described in the journal <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-026-10871-3\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Michael Wheatland, an astrophysicist at the University of Sydney who wasn&#8217;t involved with the research, said the imagery was &#8220;just incredible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve never observed the Sun at that resolution,&#8221;  Professor Wheatland said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In this amazing detail, we see all of this really interesting fundamental physics happening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Whirling patterns on the Sun&#8217;s surface<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The observations show the solar surface, called the photosphere, constantly swirls and flows with plasma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">According to the researchers, these ebbs and flows show the plasma undergoes a physical process called Kelvin-Hemholtz instability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This effect happens when different types of fluids mix, causing small fluctuations at the borders between them.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You see it in clouds, you see it in the ocean, you see it whenever you have fluids,&#8221; Professor Wheatland said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But we haven&#8217;t actually seen it on the Sun in a way that&#8217;s really unambiguous. I think the evidence here is completely unambiguous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On Earth, this instability is often driven by fluids of different temperatures or densities, or moving at different speeds. (Supplied: NSF\/NSO\/AURA\/MPS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When you mix the fluid, you move the magnetic field around as well,&#8221; Professor Wheatland said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This mixing can lead to an increase in energy which could be the reason the Sun&#8217;s corona \u2014 the outer part of its atmosphere \u2014 is so hot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Sun&#8217;s surface is roughly 5,500 degrees Celsius, but the corona above it can reach 2 million degrees.<\/p>\n<p>The solar telescope in Hawaii<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Hannah Schunker, an astrophysicist at the University of Newcastle, said because the Sun was so close to Earth \u2014 a mere 149 million kilometres away \u2014 it was the only place astronomers could study the surface of a star in detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The Sun is like an astrophysical laboratory,&#8221; Dr Schunker, who also wasn&#8217;t involved with the new research, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The observations were made with the Daniel K. (Supplied: NSF\/NSO\/AURA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Solar telescopes use the same basic technology as other large optical telescopes \u2014 large mirrors and lenses which magnify light \u2014 but since they&#8217;re designed to focus on the Sun, they need to be purpose-built.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The Sun is just so bright and produces so much more heat and light than a distant star,&#8221; Dr Schunker said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So it requires specialised filters, cooling systems and instruments that can be safely pointed at the Sun without damaging the telescope.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Friedrich Woeger, senior scientist at the US National Solar Observatory and co-lead author on the paper, said that while preparing for and analysing the observations required months of work, the imagery they captured spans only a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The acquisition of the data used in the study itself actually did not take much longer than five minutes,&#8221; Dr Woeger said.<\/p>\n<p>Predicting space weather<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Schunker said was important to understand the Sun&#8217;s magnetic field because it drives all space weather.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2024-05-14\/auroras-and-solar-maixmums-explained\/103838866\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The science behind auroras and solar storms<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Behind every solar storm there is a sunspot, and some serious physics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While these images only capture a small part of the Sun&#8217;s surface for a small period of time, she said data and modelling like this could eventually be used to predict things like solar flares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These very small-scale changes that are happening on the surface of the Sun, they are responsible for all the larger scale things happening in the atmosphere, and we&#8217;ve never been able to see them before,&#8221; Dr Schunker said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Flares and other solar phenomena can cause bright auroras on Earth, and in serious cases prompt power outages and <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2024-07-24\/aurora-geomagnetic-storm-satellites-spacelink\/104100052\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">damage to satellites and other technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We can take the small-scale physics and put it into the larger-scale models, and this will open the door to, hopefully, better weather predictions, better predictions of flares, [and] better predictions of how heat is transported up to the corona,&#8221; Dr Schunker said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An image of the surface of the Sun showing flowing orange-gold striations.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7293ae7fc4effcec49b943bb0f01f6b8.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Future observations with the Inouye telescope and other instruments will help to model the Sun&#8217;s surface more closely. (Supplied: NSF\/NSO\/AURA\/MPS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Woeger said it would be valuable to have observations of a larger section of the Sun&#8217;s surface to get more data on the patterns they observed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We are planning for future Inouye Solar Telescope measurements with instruments that provide more information about velocities and magnetic field of the plasma on the Sun,&#8221; Dr Woeger said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Wheatland said the imagery signified an exciting time for solar astronomy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Progress will be made in some of the big, outstanding questions in solar physics.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Sun&#8217;s surface is constantly churning with hot, glowing plasma.
