Smith\u2019s current team, the Rabbitohs have since provided a statement on the matter.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe South Sydney Rabbitohs acknowledge the outcome of today\u2019s court proceedings which has seen a police charge of disclosing inside knowledge for purposes of other making relevant bet against player Brandon Smith withdrawn,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Rabbitohs have informed the NRL Integrity Unit of the outcome of these proceedings.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Rabbitohs have no further comment to make on this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n
The decision comes after investigators allegedly obtained messages between Smith and his associate as part of their probe.<\/p>\n
While some of Smith\u2019s messages allegedly contained inside information, it was learned during the proceedings that the tower data (based in New South Wales) created an argument that no offence had actually been committed in Queensland<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are screenshots taken of bets being placed … of $200 for Smith for first try at odds of $91, which would have returned over $18,000,\u201d the prosecutor alleged during court proceedings.<\/p>\n
However, Smith\u2019s solicitor Paul McGirr argued that there was no evidence about what player lists were publicly available at the time.<\/p>\n

He claimed that the gambling expert\u2019s evidence previously offered by police, was \u201cpure speculation\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe brief of evidence … is extremely poorly prepared given the delay,\u201d McGirr said.<\/p>\n
McGirr also sought costs from Queensland Police, stating that investigators and the prosecutors had not acted in good faith.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven a junior prosecutor would look at this particular matter and realise there are problems,\u201d McGirr continued.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe betting company, being Sportsbet, was not spoken to.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was fatal to their case; it could never have succeeded but as late as Friday it was continuing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the insider-betting charges being withdrawn, the New Zealand international continues to battle allegations that he unlawfully supplied cocaine to NSW Blues star and Sydney Roosters forward Victor Radley on June 7 in 2025.<\/p>\n
