But that’s exactly what it became.

When Alexandra Eala walked onto Centre Court at Sobeys Stadium to face Alycia Parks, she wasn’t just playing a second-round match — she was stepping into a stadium that had sold out almost the moment her name went up on the schedule. Tickets moved in under 30 minutes. Tournament organizers, sensing what was coming, shifted the match off the 2,800-seat Grandstand and onto the main stage, because as tournament director Karl Hale put it, Eala had “probably sold upwards of 5,000 tickets” on her own. By the time the lights came up, 10,077 fans packed the venue, with organizers estimating as many as eight in ten of them were there for one reason: her.

A Crowd Unlike Anything the Tour Has Seen

This is what people are now calling the “Eala effect” — and it’s become impossible to ignore on tour. Hale, who has run tournaments for decades, said it plainly: “We’ve never seen a player ranked outside the top five have this type of effect.” Fans didn’t just show up. They brought flags. They brought signs. They brought a wall of noise loud enough that opponents have openly commented on it — including Parks herself, who after a previous meeting with Eala admitted the atmosphere made things “difficult.”

Eala has felt it building all year, from Wimbledon roars that greeted her upset of defending champion Iga Swiatek, to the sea of Filipino supporters who trailed her at the Australian Open. But Toronto felt different in scale. Fresh off becoming the first Filipino player to win a WTA singles title just days earlier in Washington, she arrived north of the border still riding that high, telling reporters, “I’ve been told that it’s going to be a full house, so I’m really very excited to see and experience the atmosphere. It’s nice to see that the Filipino community is really showing up and they’re enjoying tennis, and hopefully it will help grow the sport as well.”

The Match: Revenge, Delayed Then Delivered

There was history to settle. Parks had beaten Eala in their only previous meeting, at the Australian Open in January, storming back from a 6-0 first-set beatdown to win in three. Toronto offered a rematch with the stakes flipped — Eala now the higher seed, the in-form player, and the fan favorite by an overwhelming margin.

The match didn’t come easy. Eala controlled the first set 6-1, riding the crowd’s energy into an early statement. Parks, the owner of one of the fastest serves in WTA history, answered by leveling things at 6-4 in the second, silencing the building just long enough to make it interesting. But Eala regrouped for the decider, closing it out 6-2 to seal a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win and advance to the third round — completing the revenge she’d been openly chasing since Melbourne.

More Than a Match

What made the night resonate beyond the scoreline was the sense that something bigger is happening. Eala’s rise has coincided with a wave of Filipino tennis fandom that’s followed her from Melbourne to London to Washington and now to Toronto — watch parties springing up back home, a citation from the Philippine president after her Wimbledon run, and now a WTA 1000 stadium turned into what felt like a home crowd thousands of miles from Manila.

It hasn’t been without growing pains — Filipino fans have occasionally drawn attention from chair umpires for cheering mid-rally — but the enthusiasm has never been in question. As Eala said after arriving in Toronto, she hoped to “give them something, a new experience and a joyful experience.” Judging by the roar that shook Sobeys Stadium on Wednesday night, she delivered exactly that.

Discover more from World Tennis Magazine

Subscribe to get the latest posts sent to your email.

Wednesday night at the National Bank Open wasn’t supposed to feel like a home game for a Filipina.…

[565
69099,64,63,30660,277,85,747,750,3920
post-845251","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-alexandra-eala","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-national-bank-open","tag-philippines","tag-sports","tag-tennis","tag-tennis-news","tag-toronto
["GET
