Their conditions remain unknown.<\/p>\n \u201cOne staff member was rescued from an excavator, and we sent crews in to do an emergency rescue,\u201d Metropolitan Fire Service Chief officer Jeff Swann told 7NEWS. <\/p>\n Other Aurizon staff evacuated the staff.<\/p>\n The shed is believed to have been packed with tonnes of sulphur and remains smoldering with crews continuing efforts to starve the fire of oxygen to put it out.<\/p>\n Firefighters couldn\u2019t use water on the blaze, with crews warning it would spark a violent chemical reaction and could cause an explosion.<\/p>\n \u201cThis product is very harmful and the smoke is quite harmful,\u201d Swann said.<\/p>\n \u201cIt reacts to moisture, even sweat and that\u2019s when is poses a significant health risk.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are removing it from the building and smothering it with earth. We\u2019re currently working inside the building and using loaders to remove burning product from the building.\u201d<\/p>\n Swann and Chief Health Officer Nicola Spurrier reported several hours after the fire on Thursday that it had been extinguished.<\/p>\n However, the smoke remains extremely toxic, as the burning sulphur turns into sulphur dioxide gas, with its notable strong smell.<\/p>\n It can cause severe respiratory irritation, breathing difficulty, and burning sensations in the nose and throat.
