Aussie legend Allan Border<\/a> has called for a return of the traditional Australian Cricket Awards<\/a> at a gala ceremony after the presenting of the prestigious medal named in his honour was minimised for the second year running. The Allan Border Medal<\/a> will be presented at a low-key team event in Brisbane on Friday night before the Test squad flies to Darwin to face Bangladesh.<\/p>\n

The medal – and all the annual Aussie cricket awards – are normally presented at a televised gala night in late January or early February. But for the second year in a row the AB Medal will be presented on a much less prestigious stage.<\/p>\n

Because of how jam-packed the international cricket schedule has become, the medal was informally presented to Travis Head last year<\/a> while the Test team was in Sri Lanka. The women’s players still attended the gala ceremony in 2025, but this year there was no awards night for either of the men and women – the first time the ceremony hasn’t been held in 26 years.<\/p>\n

Allan Border hopeful cricket awards night will return<\/p>\n

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph<\/a>, Border said he felt some sadness that the medal will be presented in the middle of winter when the sporting public isn’t really focused on cricket and the voting period ended way back in January. Border said he understands the situation due to there being no space in the calendar, but wants to see a return of the traditional awards night.<\/p>\n

“I sort of understand because there’s been so much cricket when it was traditionally held\u2026it just couldn’t happen at the time,” Border said. “It does seem a bit odd to be in the middle of winter, and there’s been no cricket really played, and everyone’s sort of forgotten about who’s done what.<\/p>\n

“It is what it is. I think the players still rate the fact that it’s a great honour for them to win that medal. So whenever it’s held, it’s highly regarded by the players, and that’s important. But I’d like it to see it to go back to a traditional time and traditional sort of ceremony, where the girls are there.”<\/p>\n

On social media, cricket fans have expressed their sadness for Border over the situation. The 71-year-old is also battling Parkinson’s Disease<\/a> and has scaled back his media commitments in recent years.
