{"id":846180,"date":"2026-08-07T00:36:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T00:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/846180\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T00:36:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T00:36:13","slug":"uefa-doubles-down-on-fifa-boycott-threat-as-gianni-infantino-pressure-grows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/846180\/","title":{"rendered":"UEFA doubles down on FIFA boycott threat as Gianni Infantino pressure grows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">European football&#8217;s governing body has retained its threat to boycott FIFA competitions despite FIFA apologising for its failed plan to sell stakes in the World Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">UEFA reiterated that it had lost confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino and said conditions to withdraw its boycott threat had not been met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;UEFA&#8217;s associations were very clear about the conditions attached to the non participation in FIFA competitions,&#8221; it said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;First, the proposals to sell off the major competitions had to be withdrawn and secondly, assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;These conditions have not been met. In addition, UEFA made it abundantly clear in its statement on Saturday that it has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino&#8217;s presidency. (Reuters: Dylan Martinez)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was another bruising day for Infantino, with global football players union FIFPRO accusing him of &#8220;a profound abuse of presidential power&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;No institution can restore confidence in a presidency that has itself dismantled the conditions upon which confidence depends,&#8221; the FIFPRO statement read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Trust cannot simply be demanded. Authority cannot merely be asserted. Legitimacy cannot be proclaimed. Each must be earned.
