McCarthy for the Minnesota Vikings&#8217; starting quarterback position reportedly gained more clarity on Friday.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium mui-m06sf4\">According to ESPN&#8217;s <a class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-inherit MuiLink-root MuiLink-underlineAlways MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__ui__link__medium_strong mui-mlpnpn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/49545610\/nfl-minnesota-vikings-kyler-murray-jj-mccarthy-starting-quarterback-qb1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Seifert<\/a>, there have been &#8220;plenty of indications&#8221; that Murray is the &#8220;heavy favorite&#8221; to win the job despite the Vikings splitting snaps between both passers in training camp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium mui-m06sf4\">Per Seifert, Minnesota has given Murray &#8220;roughly two-thirds&#8221; of the snaps with its first-team offense in 11-on-11 drills while McCarthy has spent that time working with the second-team unit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium mui-m06sf4\">The Vikings initially <a class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-inherit MuiLink-root MuiLink-underlineAlways MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__ui__link__medium_strong mui-mlpnpn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/vikings-sign-kyler-murray-one-year-deal-release-cardinals\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">signed<\/a> Murray to a one-year contract as a free agent in March after he was released by the Arizona Cardinals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium mui-m06sf4\">He was limited to just five appearances during his 2025 campaign due to a\u00a0<a class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-inherit MuiLink-root MuiLink-underlineAlways MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__ui__link__medium_strong mui-mlpnpn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azcardinals.com\/news\/cardinals-qb-kyler-murray-won-t-return-this-season\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">foot injury<\/a>, completing 68.3 percent of his passes for 962 yards and six touchdowns compared to three interceptions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium mui-m06sf4\">Murray brings experience to the positional battle, as the two-time Pro Bowler has 87 starts under his belt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium mui-m06sf4\">McCarthy started 10 games during his rookie season with Minnesota in 2025, but was unable to exceed expectations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium mui-m06sf4\">He completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards and 11 touchdowns while getting picked off 12 times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MuiTypography-root MuiTypography-bp_small__body__article__medium mui-m06sf4\">Murray and McCarthy will have the opportunity to separate themselves in the quarterback competition during the Vikings&#8217; preseason action, beginning with a clash against the New York Giants on Aug. 15.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The battle between Kyler Murray and J.J.
