It was no different Saturday as Vinatieri delivered again with a heartfelt speech, peppered with some funny quips, while being enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with quarterback Drew Brees, running back Roger Craig, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and linebacker Luke Kuechly.<\/p>\n
A four-time Super Bowl champion while playing for New England and Indianapolis from 1996 to 2019, Vinatieri joins Jan Stenerud and Morten Andersen as the only full-time kickers to be enshrined. During his remarks, Vinatieri boasted he is \u201cthe greatest kicker in NFL history\u201d before playfully challenging Anderson to dethrone him.<\/p>\n
\u201cMorton,\u201d Vinatieri said to Andersen, one of 120 Hall of Famers flanking him on the stage inside Tom Benson Stadium, \u201cI have my cleats backstage just in case you disagree.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vinatieri’s remarkable journey from playing as a kid in South Dakota to football immortality is one of perseverance, perfection and performance. While others crumbled in pressure-filled moments, Vinatieri thrived, shining in the spotlight like no one before him or since.<\/p>\n
He began his speech by touching on his Midwestern roots, crediting his parents, Judy and Paul, for instilling in him he leaned on while lining up a 40-yard field goal attempt or embarking on a new start with the Colts after 10 seasons with the Patriots.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou gave me far more than opportunities. You gave me values,\u201d he said to his parents, wiping away tears as they watched their son reach football’s pinnacle. \u201cYou taught me hard work, humility, accountability, perseverance and faith. You taught me that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing right. That character mattered more than recognition.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were countless hours driving me to practices, games and camps. Sacrifices I didn\u2019t fully understand then but appreciate more every day. Everything I became as a football player started with the lessons I learned from you as your son.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vinatieri, who set league marks with 2,673 points, 599 field goals and 44 consecutive field goals made before retiring at 47, then expressed the joy of fatherhood while raising three children with his wife, Valerie.<\/p>\n
\u201cWithout you, I am not me,\u201d he told her. \u201cAnd as the kids say, I definitely out-kicked my coverage. These accomplishments are not mine alone. Every record, every championship, every honor was only possible because I had someone at home who never stopped believing in me. You are the greatest gift football has ever given me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vinatieri’s teammates and coaches also had unwavering faith in him \u2014 for good reason.<\/p>\n
He rarely missed, and never when it mattered most.<\/p>\n
His legacy of greatness began with a 45-yard field goal in blizzard-like conditions to tie the 2002 divisional playoff against the Oakland Raiders, a matchup forever known as the \u201cTuck Rule Game.\u201d He booted a 23-yarder in overtime to push the Patriots into the AFC Championship.<\/p>\n
Two weeks later, Vinatieri calmly kicked a 48-yarder as time expired to win Super Bowl XXXVI, giving the underdog Patriots their first title and one of six they would win with quarterback Tom Brady.<\/p>\n
Vinatieri took a fun-loving swipe at Brady, who was not in attendance, before praising perhaps the ultimate QB.<\/p>\n
\u201cTom, you changed the game of football forever,\u201d Vinatieri said. \u201cBut what I\u2019ll remember most is the teammate he was. His belief in the people around him inspired all of us to raise our standard, and I\u2019m honored our careers became part of the same story.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vinatieri followed his successful stint with New England with an equally sensational one in Indianapolis, where he became the Colts’ career scoring leader and helped seal the Super Bowl title in 2007 \u2014 a crowning moment for Peyton Manning, whose Hall of Fame resume was lacking only a Vince Lombardi Trophy at that time.<\/p>\n
Of course, Vinatieri couldn’t help but take a fun-loving shot at his famous teammate, thanking Manning for \u201cgenerously donating your forehead for today\u2019s teleprompter\u201d before acknowledging the impact Manning had on him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was lucky enough to know the person behind the helmet,\u201d Vinatieri said of Manning. \u201cHe\u2019s a great teammate, a great friend and someone who truly cared about everyone in that locker room. I\u2019m thankful our paths crossed, and I\u2019m proud of everything we accomplished together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vinatieri cherished his years with Manning and the Colts, and it was fitting he was presented by team CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon, daughter of late owner Jim Irsay, who died last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cJim was the ultimate rock star,\u201d Vinatieri said. \u201cOne of the most generous people I\u2019ve ever known. Out of all the famous kicks I made throughout my career, somehow my greatest accomplishment in Jim\u2019s eyes was a golf shot at one of his charity outings.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vinatieri closed by thanking the game of football, which perhaps shaped his life as much as any person.<\/p>\n
Suitably, he nailed it.<\/p>\n
\u201cLooking back now, I realize I was never just playing football. We were building a life together,\u201d he said. “You challenged me, humbled me, disciplined me, and ultimately shaped the man I became. Now it feels like a parent letting go of a grown child.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou raised me, prepared me and believed in me. And now you\u2019re telling me it\u2019s time for the next chapter. For so many years, football you were the mountain I chose to climb. Today, standing at the summit, I finally understand what the climb was really about. It was never just reaching the top.<\/p>\n
