Replacing your phone’s operating system with an aftermarket alternative has always come with compromises, but it used to feel like a hacky solution. That has changed. You can now install the latest version of custom ROMs like LineageOS and walk away with a phone that looks and feels as high-end as any other\u2014without any AI gimmicks to boot.<\/p>\n

Stock Android has come a long way<\/p>\n

LineageOS no longer has to work to make Android look good<\/p>\n

LineageOS, like most custom Android ROMs, is based on the open source foundations of the Android operating system. Put simply, if you take an Android phone, remove all the Google-y bits and leave behind only the parts whose code is publicly available, you’re left with LineageOS.<\/p>\n

While Google has taken more control over Android over the years, the fundamentals of how Android looks are free for everyone to take advantage of. App animations are smooth. Quick setting icons, the app drawer, and the lock screen all feel as attractive on a phone running LineageOS as they do on a brand new Pixel. Someone looking over your shoulder would have no immediate indication that your phone is different from any other. They’re more likely to notice the hardware in your hand, assuming it isn\u2019t smothered by a case. Only a few of us rock our phones naked these days<\/a>. \u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n

Your phone runs faster without the bloat<\/p>\n

With fewer background apps, you make the most of your phone’s power<\/p>\n

In the early days of Android, phones were too slow to handle all that we were asking of them. Apps took a few seconds to launch. Animations were stuttery. Intense tasks or memory leaks could cause a phone to freeze. Around a decade ago, this stopped being an issue on all but the most budget of phones. Our phones became so powerful that you can install most modern Android apps on a half-decade-old phone without any slowdown.<\/p>\n

Now smartphone makers cram more processing power and memory into our phones not because devices need these resources to function but to power a growing set of AI features. For those of us who make little to no use of AI, this comes with the perk of making our phones even faster when we turn all that stuff off. While you can disable many AI features and even de-Google an Android phone most of the way without replacing your operating system<\/a>, doing so removes many of those background processes that you can’t get to. The result is that my phone from 2013, running LineageOS, feels as fast as it did the day I bought it.<\/p>\n

Android’s open source app ecosystem has exploded<\/p>\n

Free apps have gotten better, and the numbers continue to grow<\/p>\n

Out of the box, LineageOS only comes with open source software, though the team does provide instructions on how to install the Play Store. I personally prefer to stick with the open-source F-Droid app store<\/a> as much as I can.<\/p>\n

The open-source apps on F-Droid have come a long way, and they place an emphasis on privacy at a time when more people are willing to pay extra money to escape digital surveillance and AI slop. There is the local-only Google Photos alternative reFra<\/a>, a on-device replacement for Google Keep called Easy Notes<\/a>, that Saber<\/a> handwriting app, and other hidden gems you haven’t heard of<\/a>. Most of these apps embrace Android’s Material You design and, to my eye, often look more attractive than the commercial apps available in the Play Store. I may not use LineageOS on my primary phone, but I enjoy these apps even more on my Motorola Razr Fold\u2014and Android phones don\u2018t get much more premium than this one (I am also keeping an eye on GrapheneOS coming to future Motorola phones<\/a>).<\/p>\n

There are now even compelling open source alternates to core apps like Gboard. FUTO Keyboard is a modern mobile keyboard<\/a> with features like swipe gestures and voice input, all operating offline. OSMAnd is a privacy-respecting and offline alternative to Google Maps<\/a>. Material Files is my go-to file manager<\/a>. You can even download apps that lack open source alternatives, like EV charging apps, from an open source Play Store client known as Aurora<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You can still take great photos<\/p>\n

Installing a custom ROM no longer means being stuck with a crappy camera<\/p>\n

For many of us, poor image quality was the primary dealbreaker when contemplating using a custom ROM. There are eras of my life that look different because I used an open source version of Android at the time, and the photos are noticeably grainy. Plus, nothing suggests to the people you interact with that you might be using a budget phone more than the crappy camera. Fortunately, the situation has changed.<\/p>\n

LineageOS developers now make it a habit to bundle the official version of a phone\u2018s camera app. This means I can choose between the open source camera app and the version that has the phone manufacturer’s extra processing built-in. Yet even if I opt to stick with open source camera options, those have gotten better as well. I\u2019ve found that PhotonCamera takes great photos<\/a> comparable to the ones I can get out of a Pixel\u2019s camera. It is not as fast, and I have to hold my phone more carefully, but the end results are similarly pleasing.<\/p>\n

Most of what makes a phone feel premium has little to do with AI<\/p>\n

A high-end phone experience starts with the hardware you\u2018re running. After that, it comes down to fast, instantaneous software with smooth animations and excellent design. The backlash to AI is real, and there are a growing number of phones hitting the market that explicitly lack these features. Depending on which Android phone you have, you don\u2018t need to buy a new device.
