No, I thought he might&#8217;ve had a career, if he got the breaks, but I couldn&#8217;t foresee that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Shakur&#8217;s promising career was cut short when he was just 25, in a Las Vegas drive-by shooting that would fuel countless conspiracy theories and a 30-year murder mystery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The case went cold for years, until a member of a rival gang released a tell-all memoir in which he said he was involved in Shakur&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Now, for the first time, the circumstances surrounding the rapper&#8217;s murder will be prosecuted in court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">And after three decades,\u00a0the world may get some answers about who killed the young superstar \u2014 and why.<\/p>\n<p>The birth of a megastar<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tupac Shakur was born in 1971 in East Harlem, New York, and named after an indigenous Peruvian revolutionary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">His mother Afeni Shakur \u2014 freshly out of jail when she gave birth to him \u2014 had been active in the Black Panther Party and wanted her son to carry the name of a powerful man of colour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Shakur&#8217;s godmother Assata Shakur was also a Black Panther and an infamous member of the Black Liberation Army who was found guilty of killing a New Jersey state trooper but maintained her innocence and escaped from prison, fleeing to Cuba.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Both women would shape his understanding of race, oppression and justice, themes that would permeate his music in years to come.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A close up of Tupac's face in black-and-white film.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/439988697b8cd5a4b2aaab0cba23cbee.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Shakur in a scene from the film Gridlock&#8217;d, released in 1997. (AP Photo: Chris Pizzello)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The young thespian thrived at the school and developed a lifelong friendship with fellow student Jada Pinkett, who also became an actor after graduating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But in 1988, Shakur and his family left Baltimore and headed west to California, seeking an escape from the poverty, housing instability and drug addiction that had plagued his mother in the east.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Pilcher said the teenager was &#8220;crushed&#8221; by the move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He had really found a home, I think, where he was respected and valued, had friends and mentors, and he was really upset that he had to leave that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>West Coast \u2014 where he found fame \u2026 and trouble<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was on the West Coast where Tupac Shakur became immersed in hip hop culture and his career accelerated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In a few short years, he went from being a dancer and backup rapper to one of hip hop&#8217;s biggest stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He released four studio albums, including All Eyez on Me, the first double-disc studio album in hip hop history, which would go on to become one of the best-selling rap albums of all time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He also starred in seven feature films, including opposite Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tupac Shakur and Shuge Knight sit on two chairs in front of a crowd\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/d2977c9dc0b92588cb941c24d9dd24c2.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Shakur (left) with founder of Death Row Records Marion &#8220;Suge&#8221; Knight. (AP Photo: Frank Wiese, File)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But it was also on the West Coast where he found himself embroiled in a fierce rivalry between opposing music scenes and record labels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The East Coast-West Coast feud centred on Death Row Records in Los Angeles and Bad Boy Records in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Marion &#8220;Suge&#8221; Knight was the co-founder of Death Row Records alongside producer Dr Dre, with acts like Snoop Dogg signed to the label.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On the East Coast, Sean &#8220;Diddy&#8221; Combs founded Bad Boy Records, which included rappers like The Notorious B.I.G.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The record labels&#8217; feud spilled beyond the music industry, and into violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Death Row Records hired security guards associated with part of the Bloods gang, which was founded in Los Angeles to compete against another group, the Crips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A part of that group, the South Side Compton Crips, had close ties with Bad Boy Records.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tupac Shakur is being wheeled in a wheelchair while his hand is in a cast\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4d0fe099a1c9188ac7950978d53f77c2.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tupac Shakur seen arriving at court on sexual assault charges after a shooting in 1994. (AP Photo: Lennox McLendon, File)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Shakur was admitted to hospital, but died six days later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">From the beginning, Scott says the police handled the case with a level of secrecy she had never experienced. She says someone within the police department told her it was because they were worried about bad publicity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Rappers, thugs and that sort of thing they thought would be bad for tourism,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That was always the bottom dollar. It still is.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">And in the absence of official information, an industry of conspiracy theories grew and festered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some speculated, without evidence, that it was an inside job by one of Shakur&#8217;s own crew. (AP Photo: Jack Dempsey, File)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Because the police didn&#8217;t respond immediately, I think that \u2026 helped fuel the conspiracies and all the ridiculousness behind it,&#8221; said Scott, who wrote a book about Shakur&#8217;s killing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The shooting sparked a &#8220;bloodbath&#8221; of retaliatory violence in Compton, Scott said. (Reuters: Ethan Miller)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In it, Davis says he was sitting in the passenger seat of the Cadillac and passed a gun to the back seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The memoir says Shakur and his entourage had &#8220;crossed the line&#8221; by beating up Davis&#8217;s nephew Orlando Anderson hours before the shooting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We couldn&#8217;t let no record company studio gangsters do us like that,&#8221; it reads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Davis&#8217;s book does not name who pulled the trigger. Three other people were in the car at the time, but they have all since died.
