Before he became one of the most influential rappers of all time, before the movies and the albums that would catapult him to global fame, before he found himself at the centre of a bloody East-West Coast hip hop rivalry, Tupac Shakur was a drama kid at a high school in Baltimore.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Richard Pilcher, the school’s principal acting instructor at the time, remembers a “charismatic” and “polite” young boy.<\/p>\n

“I know that that seems counterintuitive with the whole thug persona,” he told the ABC.<\/p>\n

“You could see that he had a lot of talent, and a ton of charisma, a killer smile, and amazing eyes.<\/p>\n

“Did I foresee that he was going to be a global megastar? No, I thought he might’ve had a career, if he got the breaks, but I couldn’t foresee that.”<\/p>\n

Shakur’s promising career was cut short when he was just 25, in a Las Vegas drive-by shooting that would fuel countless conspiracy theories and a 30-year murder mystery.<\/p>\n

The case went cold for years, until a member of a rival gang released a tell-all memoir in which he said he was involved in Shakur’s death.<\/p>\n

Now, for the first time, the circumstances surrounding the rapper’s murder will be prosecuted in court.<\/p>\n

And after three decades,\u00a0the world may get some answers about who killed the young superstar \u2014 and why.<\/p>\n

The birth of a megastar<\/p>\n

Tupac Shakur was born in 1971 in East Harlem, New York, and named after an indigenous Peruvian revolutionary.<\/p>\n

His mother Afeni Shakur \u2014 freshly out of jail when she gave birth to him \u2014 had been active in the Black Panther Party and wanted her son to carry the name of a powerful man of colour.<\/p>\n

Shakur’s godmother Assata Shakur was also a Black Panther and an infamous member of the Black Liberation Army who was found guilty of killing a New Jersey state trooper but maintained her innocence and escaped from prison, fleeing to Cuba.<\/p>\n

Both women would shape his understanding of race, oppression and justice, themes that would permeate his music in years to come.<\/p>\n

At 13, Shakur moved with his family to Baltimore, where he studied acting, poetry, jazz and ballet at the Baltimore School for the Arts.<\/p>\n

It’s there he first met Pilcher.<\/p>\n

“We had a particular connection, I think, because I taught Shakespeare and he loved Shakespeare, which is not a surprise,” he said.<\/p>\n

“He loved words, he loved language.”<\/p>\n

The young thespian thrived at the school and developed a lifelong friendship with fellow student Jada Pinkett, who also became an actor after graduating.<\/p>\n

But in 1988, Shakur and his family left Baltimore and headed west to California, seeking an escape from the poverty, housing instability and drug addiction that had plagued his mother in the east.<\/p>\n

Pilcher said the teenager was “crushed” by the move.<\/p>\n

“He had really found a home, I think, where he was respected and valued, had friends and mentors, and he was really upset that he had to leave that.”<\/p>\n

West Coast \u2014 where he found fame \u2026 and trouble<\/p>\n

It was on the West Coast where Tupac Shakur became immersed in hip hop culture and his career accelerated.<\/p>\n

In a few short years, he went from being a dancer and backup rapper to one of hip hop’s biggest stars.<\/p>\n

He released four studio albums, including All Eyez on Me, the first double-disc studio album in hip hop history, which would go on to become one of the best-selling rap albums of all time.<\/p>\n

He also starred in seven feature films, including opposite Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice.<\/p>\n

But it was also on the West Coast where he found himself embroiled in a fierce rivalry between opposing music scenes and record labels.<\/p>\n

The East Coast-West Coast feud centred on Death Row Records in Los Angeles and Bad Boy Records in New York.<\/p>\n

Marion “Suge” Knight was the co-founder of Death Row Records alongside producer Dr Dre, with acts like Snoop Dogg signed to the label.<\/p>\n

On the East Coast, Sean “Diddy” Combs founded Bad Boy Records, which included rappers like The Notorious B.I.G.<\/p>\n

The record labels’ feud spilled beyond the music industry, and into violence.<\/p>\n

Death Row Records hired security guards associated with part of the Bloods gang, which was founded in Los Angeles to compete against another group, the Crips.<\/p>\n

A part of that group, the South Side Compton Crips, had close ties with Bad Boy Records.<\/p>\n

The growing rift between the two factions spilled into violence in 1994, when Shakur was shot five times during an apparent robbery at a New York recording studio.<\/p>\n

He survived the incident but it inflamed tensions between the two sides.<\/p>\n

The murder, the investigation, the conspiracies<\/p>\n

The East-West feud hit its peak on September 7, 1996.<\/p>\n

After attending a Mike Tyson fight in Nevada, Shakur and Knight got in a car to make their way to a nearby nightclub where Shakur was due to perform.<\/p>\n

As they drove along the glitzy Las Vegas Strip, dotted with its casinos, flashing lights and tourists, a white Cadillac pulled up alongside them.<\/p>\n

A passenger in the back seat then rolled down their window and opened fire.<\/p>\n

Shakur was shot four times while Knight was grazed by a bullet.<\/p>\n

Cathy Scott, who was a crime reporter for the Las Vegas Sun at the time, remembers the night well.<\/p>\n

“I was asleep and I got the telephone call from a homicide detective who said ‘get down to the Las Vegas Strip right now, a rapper by the name of Tupac Shakur has been shot’,” she told the ABC.<\/p>\n

Shakur was admitted to hospital, but died six days later.<\/p>\n

From the beginning, Scott says the police handled the case with a level of secrecy she had never experienced. She says someone within the police department told her it was because they were worried about bad publicity.<\/p>\n

“Rappers, thugs and that sort of thing they thought would be bad for tourism,” she said.<\/p>\n

“That was always the bottom dollar. It still is.”<\/p>\n

And in the absence of official information, an industry of conspiracy theories grew and festered.<\/p>\n

Some speculated, without evidence, that it was an inside job by one of Shakur’s own crew. Others guessed the shooting was linked to his mother’s Black Panther legacy.<\/p>\n

There were even people who claimed Shakur had faked his own death.<\/p>\n

“Because the police didn’t respond immediately, I think that \u2026 helped fuel the conspiracies and all the ridiculousness behind it,” said Scott, who wrote a book about Shakur’s killing.<\/p>\n

The shooting sparked a “bloodbath” of retaliatory violence in Compton, Scott said. But eventually the East-West rivalry faded and the case went cold.<\/p>\n

Years passed, witnesses died holding onto their secrets and it seemed no-one would ever be held accountable for the killing of Shakur.<\/p>\n

That is, until Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a self-identified leader in the South Side Compton Crips, began talking about the case.<\/p>\n

A tell-all memoir leads to first murder charge<\/p>\n

In 2019, Davis released a tell-all memoir \u2014 Compton Street Legend \u2014 in which he admitted to being involved in Tupac Shakur’s shooting.<\/p>\n

In it, Davis says he was sitting in the passenger seat of the Cadillac and passed a gun to the back seat.<\/p>\n

The memoir says Shakur and his entourage had “crossed the line” by beating up Davis’s nephew Orlando Anderson hours before the shooting.<\/p>\n

“We couldn’t let no record company studio gangsters do us like that,” it reads.<\/p>\n

Davis’s book does not name who pulled the trigger. Three other people were in the car at the time, but they have all since died. None of them faced charges.<\/p>\n

In his memoir, Davis described himself \u2014 and Knight, who has also since written a memoir \u2014 as the “only living eyewitnesses to what truly happened”.<\/p>\n

In September 2023, Duane Davis was charged with orchestrating the killing of Tupac Shakur.<\/p>\n

He has pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n

‘Bigger in death than he was in life’<\/p>\n

Thirty years later, Scott still sees Shakur’s death as an overwhelming tragedy.<\/p>\n

“The whole saga \u2026 it’s just so sad, from beginning to end,” she said.<\/p>\n

In the three decades since that night, Shakur’s legend and legacy has only grown and Scott says he’s now “bigger in death than he was in life”.<\/p>\n

His posthumously released track Changes became a major protest anthem in the 2020 protests following the murder of George Floyd, vaulting it back into the music charts and reigniting conversations about racism, police brutality and inequality that had been central themes for Shakur.<\/p>\n

He’d gone from reading poetry under a streetlight because the electricity was disconnected at home to a global superstar at just 25.<\/p>\n

Scott believes, given a chance, he would have become even bigger.<\/p>\n

“He was so smart and \u2026 I think he would’ve become a spokesperson for his era,” Scott said.<\/p>\n

“He could have been a congressman for all we know \u2026 he had a big, big future and he was so bright.”<\/p>\n
