Authorities warned the figures were still changing as damage assessments continued. <\/p>\n<p>More than 2700 people had been reported missing by Monday night, according to AP, although that number includes reports lodged by families on citizen-run missing-person websites and is likely to fluctuate dramatically as communications are restored. About 165 buildings have collapsed and about 1600 buildings have been reported damaged. <\/p>\n<p>The magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia at 7.34am local time on Monday, with the US Geological Survey placing it about 107km underground. Colombia\u2019s Geological Service described it as the strongest earthquake recorded in the country this century. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/892168f8a4ee9987eb1f34934f9038ab\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Woman Flees Apartment as Deadly Earthquake Hits Manizales\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>President Abelardo de la Espriella, who was sworn into office just three days before the disaster, declared a national state of emergency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe national government has all of its capabilities deployed to protect lives, assist affected communities and deliver aid wherever it is needed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first priority is rescuing the people trapped under the rubble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hospitals in five Colombian cities were put on red alert Monday and a night-time curfew was declared in Cali, according to local authorities.<\/p>\n<p>At least six local airports suspended operations, the civil aeronautics agency said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The city fell down around us\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Australian Lisa Richards, who has lived in Cali for almost a decade, said the force of the shaking made it difficult to stand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe wall was bending, it was hard to walk actually because you felt very disorientated. It was really strong,\u201d she told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then I could hear people like my neighbours were screaming, car alarms were going off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With parts of the city without power and water, Ms Richards said residents were using social media to call for gloves, masks and water for the rescue effort.\u201cEveryone\u2019s hands [are] on deck.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Pereira business owner M\u00f3nica S\u00e1nchez told AP she and 12 workers escaped her factory moments before part of it came down.\u201cIt was shocking \u2014 the city fell down around us.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Cali resident Saul Paz said the destruction could have been even worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if it had lasted five seconds more there would be nothing left,\u201d he told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/c7aab4a08cd79762d8b39327667f79ab\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Panic erupts at Colombian airport as earthquake strikes\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Desperate search through the night<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of civilians have joined emergency crews, forming human chains and removing huge pieces of concrete by hand as searches continue across western Colombia. <\/p>\n<p>Rescuers wearing headlamps worked into the night in Cali while cranes were brought into Pereira, where emergency workers were in contact with a young boy trapped beneath a bakery. <\/p>\n<p>Extraordinary footage broadcast by Caracol Television showed rescuers pulling a six-month-old baby covered in dust from the rubble of a five-storey building in Cali. Her mother was also rescued alive. <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, rescuers were seen rappelling people from the windows of a damaged hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Firefighter Mauricio Andrade said his team had already pulled two women and two children alive from one collapsed building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are alive,\u201d he said, as crews prepared to go back in.<\/p>\n<p>Cali volunteer Carmen Yasmin Garcia said rescuers had freed seven people from another building, but others remained underneath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA moment ago there was scratching but now we can\u2019t hear anything,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Civilian rescuer Andres Felipe Mejia told AFP volunteers had arrived carrying food and supplies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are trying to get everyone out alive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the rescuers asked anyone trapped to whistle, and someone whistled back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/de91b3666fc3d923ebe901c0ea6dff2e\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Baby pulled from rubble after deadly earthquake\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/fda008a2edbb5773ab57b5ff96b1bad9\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Moment building collapses during Colombia earthquake\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>President declared state of emergency <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe national government is maintaining all its capacities deployed to protect lives, assist affected communities and deliver aid to every area that needs it,\u201d President Abelardo de la Espriella stated from Bogota.<\/p>\n<p>The quake\u2019s epicentre was in Colombia\u2019s coastal Choco region at a depth of 100 kilometres. <\/p>\n<p>Experts at the US Geological Survey said the quake was likely caused by movement along a deep fault within the Nazca tectonic plate.<\/p>\n<p>The quake crumpled a tower of a beloved cathedral in the city of Manizales, an AFP journalist observed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA great many buildings\u201d in the city sustained damage, said administrative worker Jaime Zuluaga \u201cTraffic is paralysed, and people don\u2019t want to go back to their homes for fear of an aftershock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/0dfa742f7d22dacf52e6d99980882d4a\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"People Run in Panic as Building Collapses in Earthquake\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Aussie travellers in Colombia warned<\/p>\n<p>Smartraveller has issued an urgent update for Australians in Colombia following the earthquake.<\/p>\n<p>In its latest advisory, Smartraveller states: \u201cThere are reports of damage in the cities of Cali, Manizales, Pereira and Quibdo, among others. Be aware of aftershocks and follow the advice of local authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Australians requiring urgent consular assistance have been directed to contact the Australian Embassy in Bogot\u00e1 on +57 601 657 8030, or the Consular Emergency Centre in Australia on +61 2 6261 3305 from overseas, or 1300 555 135 within Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The earthquake has also disrupted air travel across several major hub cities. <\/p>\n<p>According to Smartraveller: \u201cAir operations in Cali, Armenia, Buenaventura, Cartago, Manizales, Medellin, Pereira and Quibdo are reportedly suspended.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Travellers have been urged to contact their airline or travel agent directly for the latest updates on flight availability.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate but related development, Smartraveller has flagged heightened volcanic activity at the Purac\u00e9 Volcano, situated within a designated \u201cDo Not Travel\u201d zone between the departments of Cauca and Huila.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Purac\u00e9 Volcano &#8230; has been experiencing increased seismic activity. The Colombian Geological Service has raised the alert level,\u201d the advisory notes.<\/p>\n<p>Australians in or planning travel to the region have been strongly advised to follow the instructions of local authorities, including any directives to avoid the area altogether.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Missing people\u2019<\/p>\n<p>At least 20 buildings crumbled in Colombia\u2019s third-largest city, Cali, trapping people beneath the debris, Mayor Alejandro Eder said.<\/p>\n<p>Choco\u2019s governor warned of serious damage in the provincial capital Quibdo, where videos showed more buildings reduced to rubble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all devastated,\u201d Quibdo community leader Luis Gregorio Moreno told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this moment there are reported deaths, dozens of wounded, but what there are most of are missing people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela also felt the early-morning quake, which prompted building evacuations in the Colombian capital, Bogota.<\/p>\n<p>Still wearing their pyjamas, crowds of people rushed out into the street upon feeling the tremor, AFP reporters saw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe quake was very, very strong,\u201d said content creator Valeria Polo, 29, in the capital, where only minimal damage was recorded.<\/p>\n<p>Six small airports in western Colombia suspended operations, the civil aeronautics agency said, and the soccer governing body postponed upcoming football matches.<\/p>\n<p>Washington is \u201cclosely monitoring the large earthquake that struck Colombia and stands ready to support the people of Colombia,\u201d US Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>European Union chief Ursula von der Leyen said the EU was \u201cready to provide more support\u201d to the South American country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have already mobilised Copernicus, our satellite service, to help with rescue operations,\u201d she wrote on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Israel, Mexico, Ecuador and France also offered assistance.<\/p>\n<p>Latin America is already reeling from two disastrous quakes that struck Venezuela in June, killing more than 6,000 people and causing widespread
