Zuffa Boxing ran Z10 in Dublin Saturday night, and the main event was billed as the World Middleweight Championship. Twelve rounds, Aaron McKenna against Etinosa Oliha. On the poster, no sanctioning body appeared anywhere. Just the words \u201cworld championship\u201d and the company\u2019s name above them.<\/p>\n
The criticism arrived right on schedule: there goes Zuffa, crowning its own champion and calling it the world with no belt behind it.<\/p>\n
Except that is not what happened, and the truth is more interesting. The fight was for the vacant IBF middleweight title, a real world championship sanctioned by one of the four majors, as this site laid out before the card<\/a>. The belt had been open since the IBF stripped Janibek Alimkhanuly in March over a failed test. There was a purse order, and Amari Jones was waiting as the mandatory. The title is as legitimate as anything in the sport. Zuffa simply declined to say whose it was. The release called it a world championship. The poster called it a world championship. Dana White called it the World Middleweight title. The letters I, B, and F appeared nowhere.<\/p>\n So the complaint is not that the title is fake. The complaint is a marketing decision. And boxing has seen this exact marketing decision before, from the operation this sport still treats as its gold standard.<\/p>\n Around the turn of the millennium, HBO\u2014the network that was boxing for a generation\u2014made a practice of de-emphasizing the sanctioning bodies. It leaned on its own World Championship Boxing brand instead of the letters. The network\u2019s preference for Lennox Lewis fighting Michael Grant over the WBA\u2019s mandatory led to Lewis giving up that belt entirely. HBO kept calling its main events championship fights because its brand carried more weight than any alphabet. Nobody watching Lewis in his prime needed to hear a sanctioning body\u2019s name to know they were watching the world champion.<\/p>\n And the instinct is not ancient history. Boxing News, the sport\u2019s oldest publication, announced back in 2021 that it would no longer classify sanctioning-body title fights as world title fights. With seven belt-holders in some divisions and Super, Regular, Interim, Gold, Silver, and Franchise versions of the same championship, the words \u201cworld champion\u201d had stopped meaning anything the alphabets could define. The paper of record looked at the belt economy and quit crediting it. That policy has held for five years.<\/p>\n The alphabets earned this treatment. A WBA division can recognize multiple champions at once. The WBA erased Jarrell Miller\u2019s mandatory status this week<\/a> by calling its own published rankings an inadvertent error. The IBF\u2019s founder went to federal court over bribes for rankings. When the names on the belt become a liability in the marketing meeting, that is not disrespect. That is the market grading twenty-five years of work.<\/p>\n So on the narrow charge, I defend Zuffa without reservation. The title was real, the fight was sanctioned, and leaving the IBF\u2019s name off the poster is a choice HBO effectively made first and then profited from for decades. The market has always decided what a championship is worth. A company betting that its own name sells better than the alphabet\u2019s is simply the bet HBO once won.<\/p>\n But notice what the poster is actually previewing, because this is the part worth filing away. Zuffa fought for the IBF\u2019s belt and erased the IBF\u2019s brand. It took the legitimacy and deleted the supplier. That is a preview of exactly how the UBO era treats the sanctioning bodies: useful for the belt, invisible on the marquee, suppliers rather than partners. The victory the WBC is celebrating in Washington<\/a>\u2014the preserved titles, the recognition language\u2014comes with the font size Zuffa chooses. On Saturday the font size was zero.<\/p>\n And it is already a pattern, not just one poster. Ryan Garcia defends his WBC welterweight title against Conor Benn on September 12 on a Zuffa card. Look at the official artwork: World Welterweight Championship across the top, logos for Ring Magazine, Zuffa Boxing, DAZN, Paramount+, and the arena across the bottom. No WBC anywhere. And no Golden Boy, which has promoted Garcia his entire career and remains attached to him. For a hundred years the industry norm has been that the fighter\u2019s promoter gets a logo on the poster. Not this poster. Golden Boy pushed back, and the WBC put out its own artwork with the logos restored. That only proves the point rather than softens it: the organizations now have to fight their way back onto the marquee of their own champion\u2019s fight. Same play as Dublin, second sanctioning body, one month apart. And there is a third. When Zuffa announced Jai Opetaia against Noel Mikaelian for the same September 12 card, it described Mikaelian only as a two-time world champion. Mikaelian is the reigning WBC cruiserweight champion. Three events, three sanctioning bodies, zero names. Welcome to boxing in 2027. The belts still exist, the organizations still collect, the promoters still hold contracts, and the marquee belongs to whoever runs the show.<\/p>\n
