{"id":852578,"date":"2026-08-12T12:32:39","date_gmt":"2026-08-12T12:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/852578\/"},"modified":"2026-08-12T12:32:39","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T12:32:39","slug":"solar-eclipse-horse-racing-cricket-and-athletics-forced-to-adapt-to-disruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/852578\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar eclipse: Horse racing, cricket and athletics forced to adapt to disruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The horse racing meeting at Ffos Las in South Wales will begin about two hours earlier on Wednesday because of the solar eclipse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The UK and parts of Europe are set to experience the most significant solar eclipse in nearly three decades, which is set to begin shortly after 18:00 BST.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">At other sporting events, including four Hundred cricket matches on Wednesday, floodlights will be turned on throughout matches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It will be the most dramatic eclipse visible from the UK since 1999, and the first time a total eclipse can be seen from continental Europe since then too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">At Ffos Las, the first race was scheduled for 17:40 BST but that has now been rescheduled by the British Horseracing Authority to 15:35.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Officials at Kempton racecourse, which has races scheduled for 19:00 and 19:30, said there will be no disruption as all races were set to be under floodlights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">During the solar eclipse in August 1999, a League Cup football match between Torquay United and Portsmouth at Plainmoor stadium was postponed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Devon and Cornwall Police forced the delay because an influx of tourists travelling to the English coast left local authorities under-staffed to safely manage stadium crowds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It was played six days later. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The horse racing meeting at Ffos Las in South Wales will begin about two hours earlier on Wednesday&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":852579,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[564],"tags":[64,63,740,85],"class_list":["post-852578","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-cricket","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-cricket","tag-sports"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/852578","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=852578"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/852578\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/852579"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=852578"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=852578"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=852578"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
