Cleveland could be a situation for him, but Cleveland is, I think, prioritizing a Peyton Watson effort compared to Jonathan Kuminga right now.”

Cleveland has consistently been mentioned alongside the Los Angeles Lakers as one of Kuminga’s most notable suitors throughout the offseason.

If the Cavaliers ultimately remove themselves from the conversation, one of Kuminga’s more realistic landing spots would disappear at a time when his market already appears relatively limited.

The situation does not mean Kuminga is destined to return to Atlanta or that another team cannot suddenly emerge. However, with training camp getting closer and little progress being reported elsewhere, Kuminga and his camp may eventually have to reconsider which available option gives him the best combination of money, role and long-term opportunity.

Cleveland potentially backing away changes Kuminga’s market

Cleveland’s reported shift in priorities could significantly affect Kuminga’s leverage. Fischer indicated that James Harden and his camp are running out of patience regarding negotiations on a contract extension, giving the Cavaliers another important situation that could take precedence over pursuing Kuminga.

If Cleveland decides securing Harden is its primary objective, constructing a sign-and-trade with Atlanta becomes considerably less important. That would leave one fewer team competing for Kuminga and potentially strengthen the Hawks’ position in negotiations, especially considering Atlanta has shown no urgency to accept an underwhelming return.

The Lakers remain the most prominent outside option, but talks between Atlanta and Los Angeles have reportedly failed to generate meaningful progress on more than one occasion.

Los Angeles has maintained interest in Kuminga throughout the offseason, yet interest alone will not complete a deal if the Lakers cannot present Atlanta with a package President of Basketball Operations Onsi Saleh considers worthwhile.

Minnesota also recently registered interest, adding another potential destination to Kuminga’s market. However, there has been little indication that the Timberwolves have made significant progress toward constructing a sign-and-trade package that would convince Atlanta to move him.

None of those developments completely close the door on a deal. NBA negotiations can change quickly, and it only takes one new offer or adjustment to a trade framework for conversations that previously appeared stagnant to suddenly gain momentum.

Returning to Atlanta may become Kuminga’s best option

As Kuminga’s outside market potentially shrinks, returning to the Hawks becomes increasingly difficult to ignore. Atlanta has maintained interest in bringing him back, and the Hawks possess his Bird rights, giving them more flexibility than other interested teams when it comes to constructing a new contract.

That does not mean Hawks fans should start preparing for Kuminga’s return just yet. Atlanta has continued reshaping its roster throughout the offseason, including adding Lu Dort and Aaron Wiggins, while several other roster decisions still need to be made before the start of training camp.

Still, familiarity could work in Kuminga’s favor if his other options continue disappearing. He already understands Quin Snyder’s system, established himself as a valuable contributor after arriving in Atlanta and would return to a roster that appears capable of making noise in the Eastern Conference.

A return could also give Kuminga another opportunity to strengthen his value before revisiting his future later. Rather than forcing a sign-and-trade to a team that cannot provide Atlanta with sufficient compensation, both sides could determine that another season together is the most practical outcome.

There is still plenty of time for the situation to change, and Cleveland has not necessarily closed the door completely. The Lakers could improve their offer, Minnesota could become more aggressive or another unexpected suitor could enter the conversation before training camp.

For now, however, Kuminga’s market appears to be moving in the wrong direction. If Cleveland ultimately prioritizes Harden and removes itself from sign-and-trade discussions while Los Angeles and Minnesota remain at a standstill, Kuminga could find himself with fewer realistic destinations than he had only a short time ago.

That would not automatically send him back to Atlanta, but it would make a Hawks reunion increasingly logical (don’t hold your breath).

With the offseason continuing to move forward and training camp approaching, Kuminga and his camp may eventually reach a point where waiting for a better opportunity is no longer the best option.

Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow

Jonathan Kuminga’s prolonged free agency saga may have encountered another significant obstacle.
