Within two decades of its discovery, around 90% of its population had been wiped out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f6c8400013b6rxnqqs1n2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Well known to the people who lived in the forest, the Niger Delta red colobus, with its striking black, orange and white coat, was already rare when first documented by researchers, with an estimated 10,000 of the monkeys living in the region. But hunting, and habitat loss from tree felling and from oil-extraction roads and canals meant that by 2010, it ranked among the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120802214009\/http:\/www.primate-sg.org\/PDF\/Primates.in.Peril.2008-2010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">world\u2019s most endangered<\/a> primates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f6c8400023b6rmreo4vvq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When she first visited the area in 2013, Nigerian conservationist Rachel Ikemeh knew she had to act fast to save the monkey. A species endemic to Nigeria, the surviving population had retreated into fragmented habitat pockets scattered across 77 square miles of the vast Niger Delta region in the south of the country.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmsoht2k4000i3b6r5u7cgj15@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This ancestral landscape covering 27,000 square miles is home to the second-largest swamp forest in Africa, the third-most expansive mangrove forest in the world, and vital coral reefs and marine ecosystems \u2014 a playground the primate had once roamed freely.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f6c8400033b6r9aedh0d1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At first, Ikemeh  was reluctant to involve local people.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f6unf00063b6r1esag5ui@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn my line of work, I was given the impression that communities were always to blame,\u201d Ikemeh told CNN. \u201cThey\u2019re the culprit, the problem to the natural environment. The ones hunting (animals) to extinction and the ones driving deforestation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f6v9800073b6r3salfx74@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With no other alternative in sight, Ikemeh decided to take a leap of faith. She launched the community-led conservation program South-West\/Niger Delta Forest Project (SWNDFP) and traveled to the Apoi Creek Forest to meet with locals. She taught them about conservation, the animals\u2019 needs, and data collection and by 2021 she had successfully set up a conservation area covering 2,500 acres of surrounding forest, policed and protected by the local Apoi community.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f6v9800083b6rg40c571i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Niger Delta red colobus was \u201cright at the edge of becoming extinct,\u201d Ikemeh recalled. \u201cBut today, as I speak to you, we have the records of four thriving groups, nursing and nurturing their babies. They\u2019re repopulating where conservation areas were created, where habitat restoration is ongoing, and where the forest is now being restored.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f6v9800093b6rnqetzwrk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the population was believed to have fallen to 200 at one point, it is estimated to have doubled since the program was established. It\u2019s a success for Ikemeh, who never expected this first initiative to become a decade-long community-based project.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/village-aerial-leigbene-foropa.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial view of Leigbene in Foropa Middleton Kingdom\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1080\" width=\"1920\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000c3b6rgtjsjc31@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As the years passed, SWNDFP\u2019s scope would grow far beyond the Apoi Creek Forest and the community, now protecting more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swnigerdeltaforestproject.org.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">20,000 acres of forest and at least 16 threatened species<\/a>, according to the organization. \u201cThe only way these monkeys can have a long-term future is for us to scale to other surrounding areas,\u201d Ikemeh explained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000d3b6rdqz5goad@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Earlier this year, the Rolex Awards Laureate took her mission a step further by establishing Nigeria\u2019s first locally managed marine area, in Foropa Middleton Kingdom, a coastal community along the Atlantic Ocean.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000e3b6rf3zlk57x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Located in the heart of the Niger Delta, its shores have drastically changed over recent decades. Sharks, dolphins, sea turtles and schools of fish used to be a common sight but have dwindled. Oil spills, caused by aging equipment, militant sabotage, and illegal artisanal refining have turned the delta into one of the most severely polluted environments on Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000f3b6ri7npsieg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Black sand mining \u2014 the extraction of heavy mineral deposits from the coast \u2014 has also had an impact. All this pollution, Ikemeh explained, has forced local fishing communities like the Foropa Kingdom to take up logging and poaching, further degrading the Niger Delta red colobus\u2019s habitat.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000g3b6r8o2r152v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This region needed to be brought back to health if the monkey\u2019s population was to expand there. But marine life, unlike swamp forests, isn\u2019t Ikemeh\u2019s forte. Once again, she realized community involvement was key.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000h3b6rf1ybtavi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you want something to be sustainable, you want it to be stewarded by the people who live closest to it and by the people who need it for their livelihood,\u201d said Ikemeh. \u201cThey\u2019ve seen the exploitation, and now they want a different future.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The first to be involved in the project were local fishermen, Ikemeh explained, but also \u201cformer loggers, former hunters, who are bringing in their skills and knowledge, now channelling them into conservation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000k3b6r1knborbq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chef Josaih Uson, former chairman, Chiefs\u2019 Council of Foropa Middleton Kingdom, explained the community\u2019s participation: \u201cWe\u2019re preserving the protected area by actively preventing hunters and fishermen from coming,\u201d he said, adding that they\u2019re redirecting these activities toward nonprotected areas, and also prohibiting fishermen from using tools that would damage the reefs, such as dynamite, as well as educating them against mangrove logging.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000l3b6raftpm78n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFuture generations will enjoy this,\u201d Uson said. \u201cThe areas are now more secure and this has created more employment.\u201d SWNDFP estimates it has supported the livelihoods of almost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swnigerdeltaforestproject.org.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">14,000 people<\/a> in the region.\n    <\/p>\n<p> data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Local villager Mary Wallson Alamene leads women in organizing cleanups.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000n3b6r29iqbwex@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe women in my community are now cleaning up the land and the water side,\u201d she said. \u201cBottles, bags, pampers (diapers) \u2026 if you don\u2019t contaminate marine life, you won\u2019t lose it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000o3b6rt3uu8nhm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She is also educating the youth about protecting the environment, contributing to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swnigerdeltaforestproject.org.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">27,000 people now engaged in conservation education<\/a> through Ikemeh\u2019s organization.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000p3b6rg9sua4hq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAll of the news about the Niger Delta is only about oil, but there\u2019s so much more to this place than just oil,\u201d Ikemeh said. \u201cThe land, the people: everybody has been victims of exploitation here.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cms8f7etb000q3b6rlkqpt3tk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The project\u2019s long-term goal is to bring more than 1 million acres of the region under community supervision.
