A century-old Adelaide workers club has condemned the neo-Nazi vandalism of its premises as an act of “modern-day fascism”.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Semaphore Workers Club staff said the venue had been broken into sometime earlier this week by intruders who daubed Nazi symbols on two of its pool tables.<\/p>\n

Dave Kirner, from the club’s administration committee, told 891 ABC Adelaide the attack had “appalled” and “disgusted” staff.<\/p>\n

“A group of people broke into the building and smashed the heritage bay window and then ended up spraying swastikas onto the heritage 120-year-old billiard tables,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We got calls about it today after tradies saw the broken windows. Representatives of the club came in and just saw and [were] just absolutely horrified.”<\/p>\n

Mr Kirner said he suspected whoever was responsible was opposed to the club \u2014 which has strong ties to the trade union movement \u2014 and its support for a “lot of progressive issues”.<\/p>\n

“All it’s done is it’s mobilised a whole lot of people in opposition to what basically appears to be modern-day fascism in South Australia,” he said.<\/p>\n

“There’s been a lot of activities by these types of groups right throughout Australia and it normally involves aggressive violent approaches.<\/p>\n

“We’re strongly opposed to that and strongly opposed to the sort of messages they put out which are disgraceful [and] racist.”<\/p>\n

SA Police confirmed it was investigating a break-in “at a premises at Esplanade, Semaphore” which occurred between 4:30pm on Monday and 3pm on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

“It is believed entry was gained after a window was smashed,” police said in a statement.<\/p>\n

“Damage was caused within the premises and items including alcohol were stolen.”<\/p>\n

The incident comes amid a federal royal commission into antisemitism in Australia<\/a>, and follows the vandalism of an Adelaide property with antisemitic messages and symbols last month<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The club earlier said it would ensure police were notified of the incident, and Mr Kirner estimated the cost of repairs at more than $15,000.<\/p>\n

Workers club president Sally Mitchell said the site was a popular live music venue and that it had previously been targeted for political reasons.<\/p>\n

“We’ve had stickers put on the fence and that type of thing,” she said.<\/p>\n

“This invasion, coming into the premises causing the damage, is outrageous and unacceptable.<\/p>\n

“They’ve tried entry at the rear of the premises without success \u2026 [and] then have caused quite significant damage coming through a window.”<\/p>\n

She said the club had insurance, but had no footage \u2014 and would be “upgrading our security, of course”.<\/p>\n

“We’re just in the process of upgrading cameras \u2026 [but] not soon enough, basically,” she said.<\/p>\n

“The premises will retain its character and its political nature \u2014 that doesn’t change. We don’t shy away from fascists.”<\/p>\n
