This was an opportune night to show off some of Uefa\u2019s crown jewels. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia knows a thing or two about sitting Fifa tournaments out, albeit through sheer accident of birth, but proved yet again that he will show up whatever the stage. It was some way to kick off a European football season when the Georgian, with a familiar exhibition of assured footwork and rip-roaring finishing, found Marco Bizot\u2019s top corner. Given the past fortnight\u2019s events nobody could turn their noses up at a reminder of why, through the muck and grubbiness that has thrown the sport into turmoil<\/a>, we are all really here.<\/p>\n

Earlier on, the Uefa hierarchy and guests had enjoyed their pre-match lunch inside Hangar 7, a vast exhibition hall next to Salzburg airport that houses an array of cars and craft from Red Bull\u2019s various endeavours. A main course of Wagyu tenderloin stole the scene and, for those craving a dose of local flavour, curd cheese dumplings were served next. But the main topic of conversation on the menu brought a more bitter taste. The fallout from Gianni Infantino\u2019s collapsed Fifa Forward Enterprise scheme<\/a> will cast its own eclipse over football until an agreeable resolution has been reached.<\/p>\n

It is becoming clearer by the day that this will not occur straightaway. The chances of Infantino stepping aside voluntarily appear slim, even if he will have to front up and answer for himself at some point. Uefa<\/a> has, at least, set a brisk pace in efforts to bring about his removal. There was a palpable sense of purpose on the sidelines of an occasion that does not always lure its member associations from the sun lounger. If a first day back at school is usually for reintroductions and holiday tales, this time there was a steady hum of discussion concerning the fundamentals of football\u2019s future around Uefa\u2019s temporary base in the neo-baroque trappings of Hotel Sacher.<\/p>\n

In the short term there remains a live risk that the prognosis involves a boycott of Fifa-run competitions, beginning in theory with the under-20 women\u2019s World Cup next month. How strongly that holds remains to be seen. Uefa can certainly feel confident in its own product, fronted by a Champions League with revenues that have long roused the green-eyed monster within Fifa\u2019s mandarins. Even this Super Cup final<\/a>, a souped-up friendly between the world\u2019s best team and contenders revelling in a generational high, offered enough hope that football tends to rise high above those wrecking it from within.<\/p>\n

A dazzling first impression on the wider consciousness by Brian Madjo, a 17-year-old striker of phenomenal strength and composure, told that the future is worth nurturing. Madjo, who had never played a competitive game for Aston Villa, scored their equaliser and gave Paris Saint-Germain\u2019s defence a pummelling all night. The PSG matchwinner, D\u00e9sir\u00e9 Dou\u00e9, is a bona-fide star who turned 21 in June and was similarly unknown three years ago. Sport stretches, strains and regenerates, even if it is never wise to take that for granted.<\/p>\n

The presence of Omar Artan, the Somali referee denied entry to the US<\/a> before the World Cup, was a reminder of modern-day tensions. How refreshing it was to see Artan, who officiated with a sure touch and quiet authority, given his chance after Uefa swiftly awarded him the final in June. It is what a fluid, coherent global football landscape should look like and was only ever going to be a significant win for the European game\u2019s governing body.<\/p>\n

Before the match a supporter could be seen queueing at the turnstile wearing a Somalia national team tracksuit top. Anyone worried Artan and his all-African team of colleagues would be spared the full elite football experience could crack a wry smile as they were lightly booed upon collecting their medals, the Villa support smarting from the correct VAR call that awarded Dou\u00e9\u2019s goal.<\/p>\n

Back in Hangar-7, whose glass-panelled design has greenhouse-like consequences on days like these, Uefa\u2019s delegates had sucked up the obligatory speeches and chewed over what might come next. There will be more heat to weather in the seven months before Infantino is due to stand for re-election in Rabat, which has become a safe haven for the embattled Swiss. The strength of Europe\u2019s united front may be the decisive factor in whether, as one diner bullishly opined later, Infantino really is toast.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, the beguiling, unorthodox and often unplayable figure of Kvaratskhelia spoke more eloquently than any politician could. Uefa and many of its allies will meet again in a fortnight for the Champions League draw, held in Monaco and generally an event that causes more buzz among powerbrokers.
