Cadillac has made its first major leadership change since joining Formula 1, appointing Marcin Budkowski as team principal in place of Graeme Lowdon midway through its debut season.<\/p>\n

The 49-year-old former Renault and Alpine executive director will take charge of Cadillac\u2019s trackside operation from next weekend\u2019s Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.<\/p>\n

Cadillac described the change as a planned transition as the organisation moves from establishing the new team into a greater focus on car development and racing performance.<\/p>\n

Lowdon had overseen the creation of Cadillac\u2019s Formula 1 operation and its arrival on the grid this season as the championship expanded to 11 teams.<\/p>\n

Cadillac CEO Dan Towriss said Budkowski\u2019s appointment marked the next stage of the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the beginning, our goal has not been simply to participate in Formula 1, but to build a next-generation team capable of competing at the very front,\u201d Towriss said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarcin brings exceptional F1 experience, technical expertise and strategic leadership that will strengthen our organisation and help us develop the winning mindset, tools and processes required for long-term success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Towriss also thanked Lowdon for his role in establishing the team.<\/p>\n

Cadillac still chasing first point<\/p>\n

The leadership change comes after a difficult but not unexpected start to Cadillac\u2019s first Formula 1 season.<\/p>\n

After 11 Grands Prix, Cadillac sits 11th and last in the constructors\u2019 championship and remains the only team yet to score a point.<\/p>\n

Cadillac entered Formula 1 this year with one of the most experienced driver combinations on the grid, bringing 10-time Grand Prix winner Valtteri Bottas and six-time winner Sergio Perez back into full-time competition.<\/p>\n

The team\u2019s MAC-26 uses Ferrari power, while General Motors continues development of its own Formula 1 power unit for introduction in 2029.<\/p>\n

Its best result so far came in China, where Bottas climbed from 20th on the grid to finish 13th, with Perez two places behind in 15th.<\/p>\n

Cadillac came considerably closer to opening its points account in Monaco.<\/p>\n

Perez crossed the line 10th and appeared to have secured the team\u2019s first Formula 1 point, only to receive a 10-second post-race penalty after the stewards determined his car had been incorrectly positioned for a restart. The penalty dropped him to 15th.<\/p>\n

There have been signs of improved pace since then, although converting that into results has remained difficult during the team\u2019s first season.<\/p>\n

The final weekend before the summer break was less encouraging, with both cars retiring from the Hungarian Grand Prix after qualifying towards the rear of the field.<\/p>\n

Budkowski back in the paddock<\/p>\n

Budkowski brings a broad Formula 1 background to the role, having worked for Prost, Ferrari and McLaren before moving to the FIA, where he rose to a senior technical position.<\/p>\n

He joined Renault in 2018 and later became executive director as the operation transitioned into Alpine, remaining with the team until January 2022.<\/p>\n

Alpine won the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix with Esteban Ocon during Budkowski\u2019s time in its senior management structure.<\/p>\n

More recently, the Polish-French engineer has worked as an adviser to teams, drivers and other motorsport organisations.<\/p>\n

Budkowski said improving the effectiveness of Cadillac\u2019s development program under Formula 1\u2019s cost cap would be an immediate priority.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a phase of huge opportunity for the team, one that will be defined by a clear objective: maximising car development within the cost cap and turning every team function on to compete,\u201d Budkowski said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat means building an elite organisation with a winning mindset, driven, relentless in the face of setbacks, obsessed with detail and process, and able to execute with precision on race day.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy focus will be on aligning our people, tools and information flow so the right decisions are made quickly, and the performance of the car improves every time we go racing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Budkowski\u2019s first race in charge will be the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort from 21 to 23 August.<\/p>\n

Cadillac heads into the second half of its inaugural season still searching for its first championship points, but with its management structure now shifting from building an F1 team to making it competitive.<\/p>\n
