Amy Satterthwaite is stepping into the role of Canterbury coach at her former Association PHOTO: LINTOTT PHOTOGRAPHY<\/p>\n
Former Canterbury Magicians captian and White Ferns greatskipper, Amy Satterthwaite is stepping up to mentor the next generation in her first appointment as a Major Association Head Coach.<\/p>\n
Satterthwaite takes over the reins of the team she farewelled after the 2023 Hallyburton Johnstone Shield Final from long-serving former Wellington Firebirds rep, Rhys Morgan.<\/p>\n
Morgan’s six years in the role produced two Super Smash titles for the Magicians (2020\/21 and 2022\/23) as well as the 2020\/21 Hallyburton Johnstone Shield.<\/p>\n
When Satterthwaite retired after the 2022\/23 one-day Final against the Blaze in Queenstown, she finished as her team’s all-time leading one-day runscorer with 5,147 runs built over an influential 20-year career at the top. <\/p>\n
She’s since been overtaken by Frankie Mackay (5,188), but the pair have a phenomenal 2,000-run margin over the next on that elite list (Debbie Hockley). <\/p>\n
Satterthwaite is meanwhile still the outright Canterbury record-holder on the T20 front with 2,925 runs – Mackay couldn’t quite reel in that one with her own majestic career tally of 2,821.<\/p>\n
Satterthwaite transitioned into coaching and player development after her retirement, including coaching the North team in the annual North v South NZC series. <\/p>\n
She takes on the role of Head Coach \u2013 Female Performance after having worked across the Magicians’ and Canterbury female pathway environments as the local female pathway lead, and significantly becomes the only current female Head Coach of a New Zealand Domestic team this summer.<\/p>\n
Satterthwaite also brings experiences as an assistant coach for the Adelaide Strikers in the Australian WBBL, and an exceptional understanding of high performance cricket.<\/p>\n
She played in 145 ODIs and 111 T20 Internationals for her country as a world-class spinning allrounder, captain and leader – the only woman to have emulated Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara in men’s cricket by scoring four consecutive ODI centuries.<\/p>\n
She also represented the Hobart Hurricanes, Lancashire Thunder and Melbourne Renegades in the tail of her career and is looking forward to returning this summer to the New Zealand Domestic circuit where the 39-year-old once refined and polished her own elegant craft.<\/p>\n
In a double change for Canterbury Cricket, Brendon Donkers will meanwhile officially take over the coaching reins of Plunket Shield champion Canterbury (competing as the Canterbury Kings in the Super Smash).<\/p>\n
Donkers, 50, had been the team’s longtime Assistant Coach under ex-Head Coach Peter Fulton who departed part-way through last season (2025\/26) to become Head Coach of Middlesex in the UK.<\/p>\n
Donkers took over the Head Coach role for the rest of last summer on an interim basis and has now been formally appointed to follow in Fulton’s successful footsteps at CCA. <\/p>\n
