On Saturday, Wilfert himself was pulled underwater by a white shark during a swimming drill a few hundred yards off the beach, in an encounter he said was a wakeup call to redouble safety efforts with the tools at their disposal.

“I’m taking this extremely seriously,” said Wilfert.

On Wednesday, crowds at Scarborough Beach were thin, but beach life continued as drones whirred overhead and lifeguards raced around on ATVs.

At the lifeguard tower, under a red flag marking hazardous conditions, two guards are “more than the state has at their beaches combined.”

In addition to flying a drone in the air every few minutes to monitor the waves for possible sightings, Wilfert said beachgoers are limited to waist-deep wading for the foreseeable future.

<p class="paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless class="paragraph | gutter_20_0 railless margin_horizontal_10 width_max_1080">Chisholm said educating swimmers on remaining “shark smart,” by avoiding swimming alone or near schools of fish Maine’s Department of Marine Resources, said it’s unclear what’s causing the recent surge in white shark sightings in Maine.

Last year Scarborough Beach logged over 30 days with recorded shark activity across species, more than any other site monitored by scientists in Maine, according to state data.

Davis added the state has limited data as it began monitoring sharks in earnest just six years ago,<a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/07/28/metro/eyewitness-describes-maine-shark-attack-victim-identified-63-year-old-woman-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow
