(AAP: Phillip Island Nature Parks)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A federal government report dubbed &#8220;a list of doom&#8221; has warned almost 400 native bird and mammal species are at high to extreme risk from bird flu, including penguins, sea lions and seals <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-13\/threat-to-tasmanias-endangered-and-native-wildlife-from-bird-flu\/107031902\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107031902\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">and the Tasmanian Devil.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The federal government has committed $2 million to vaccinate vulnerable birds in captivity, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/science\/2026-08-12\/phillip-island-penguins-to-be-rounded-up-for-bird-flu-vaccine\/107025662\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/107025662\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">along with more than 5,000\u00a0penguins on Victoria&#8217;s Phillip Island and St Kilda.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Obviously we have some quite unique animals and wildlife in Australia that we are concerned about,&#8221; Agriculture Minister Julie Collins told 7.30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In terms of the funding, the $113 million, over $47 million of that has gone into resilience and improving habitat for those threatened native species.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">University of Queensland virologist Kirsty Short said she was concerned about the virus&#8217;s impact on native birds, based on research which had shown black swans were more susceptible to the virus than white swans.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We hypothesised based on this that Australia&#8217;s geographic isolation could cause some species to have a restricted immune response because there wasn&#8217;t that selective pressure, and as a result, being more susceptible to H5N1 than say Northern Hemisphere species,&#8221; Professor Short said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, Australia has a very strong history of extinction. And the thing that I&#8217;m concerned about is that this may be the tipping factor that tips a species into extinction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It&#8217;s been almost two months since bird flu was detected in Australia. (ABC News: Nick O&#8217;Farrell)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While the virus has been found in wild and native birds in Australia, it&#8217;s yet to be detected in poultry here. The risk to humans is low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Professor Short told 7.30 the virus is brutal on poultry.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Chickens can actually have a lot of swelling and haemorrhaging, and they can die within 24 hours,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Farmers like Victorian egg producer Brian Ahmed are preparing for the worst.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;At the moment we&#8217;re very strict on who we allow onto the property. It&#8217;s how we support our families. That&#8217;s it.
