It’s inclusivity in its finest form … and is a huge step forward!”

But for others, the question came with a massive downside, prompting many to accidentally ‘come out’ to their entire families long before they were ready.

“Filled it out as a whole household and this question literally made me come out to my grandparents. The silence was staggering,” one woman confessed online.

“No-one in our house identifies as straight apparently,” another user weighed in.

Queer creator Kath Ebbs summed up the nationwide panic perfectly, captioning a viral TikTok: “Happy Census night to all the Aussie about to come out for the first time to their computers”

The question, for many others, left them genuinely confused.

“I was stuck between straight or bisexual for a solid 15 minutes,” one person joked, while another simply admitted: “I got confused and clicked ‘don’t know’.”

Family ‘skeletons’

Sexuality wasn’t the only topic ruffling feathers.

Over on Reddit, a viral thread titled: “What skeletons have come out since doing ‘The Census’?” became a forum for the country’s most unhinged household dramas.

“My drama? I found out I’m part Scottish. Yes, we’re still a family,” one user joked.

But the absolute juiciest revelation involved a pair of elderly parents who are seemingly living a wild double life.

“My elderly parents spend winter in a warmer place than their home city,” the user began, explaining that their folks fiercely refused to complete the Census from their winter address.

“I’ve slowly been discovering small bits of information and signs that they may have been spending 3-6 months of the year for the last 20 years at a swingers/nudist camp,” they revealed.

“They don’t want that address to be recorded!”

If the swinger parents weren’t enough, religion and income proved to be risky territory for others.

Families got their knickers in a knot discovering exactly how much, or how little, their relatives were earning. Meanwhile, sudden religious affiliations left siblings baffled.

“My sister who is not baptised, was not raised as religious, does not believe in God or Jesus, and has never attended a church, put herself down as a Catholic. When I asked why she did this, she said ‘I don’t know’,” one person shared.

Another user copped serious heat from their mum: “My mother was very upset at my ‘no religion’ response. She said ‘what happens if God reads this’ and recommended I don’t agree to the information going public in 99 years.”

Another huge point of contention for families and couples was the domestic labour divide, which was brutally highlighted on Tuesday night.

“My husband secretly has been doing 5-14 hours of unpaid housework a week, apparently,” one woman sarcastically poked fun.

Another couple went viral on TikTok over their highly tense chore negotiations.

“Now, this is the question that’s getting everyone in Australia, and it can end up in a fight – which I believe ours could,” the woman noted in the clip.

When her partner confidently claimed he did “five to 14 hours” of domestic labour a week, her response was instant and brutal.

“F*** off. Come on. Be truthful!” she shot back.

After a tense standoff, they ultimately settled on “less than five”.

While the Australian Bureau of Statistics requires this data to help our society function, it’s safe to say millions of Aussies are breathing a sigh of relief that they won’t have to do this again for another five years.

Tuesday night was supposed to be a tedious evening of government paperwork.
