Earlier this week, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/colombia-earthquake-search-recovery-president_n_6a7b75cce4b07b8d622551f5\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"shook western Colombia\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"6a7b75cce4b07b8d622551f5\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shook western Colombia<\/a>, causing widespread damage and killing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c20e360lx0vo\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"at least 169 people.\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c20e360lx0vo\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">at least 169 people.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In June, four massive earthquakes <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/in-the-news\/did-the-tremors-in-california-and-japan-trigger-a-pair-of-earthquakes-in-venezuela\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"struck different parts of the world \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/in-the-news\/did-the-tremors-in-california-and-japan-trigger-a-pair-of-earthquakes-in-venezuela\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">struck different parts of the world <\/a>\u2015 Northern California, Venezuela and Japan \u2015 within a span of eight hours.<\/p>\n<p>The string of major earthquakes in recent months has left many wondering whether the quakes are connected and if the frequency of earthquakes we\u2019ve been experiencing is out of the ordinary. <\/p>\n<p>As unnerving as all the earthquake news has felt, geologists say there\u2019s nothing atypical about the current earthquake patterns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may feel like we\u2019re having an unusually large number of earthquakes, but statistically, this has been a fairly normal year,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/drwendyrocks\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Wendy Bohon\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/drwendyrocks\/?hl=en\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wendy Bohon<\/a>, a geologist who studies earthquakes. <\/p>\n<p>Globally, we typically see about 15 to 18 earthquakes between magnitude 7.0 and 7.9 each year, Bohon told HuffPost. So far this year, we\u2019ve had 10, which puts us on the lower end of what we would expect by this point in the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is notable is that several recent earthquakes have been damaging or destructive,\u201d she said. \u201cThose are the events we hear about, see images of, and remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-sized__img landscape\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" alt=\"A woman walks past the rubble of a collapsed building after an earthquake in Pereira, Colombia, on Aug. 11, 2026.\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6a7cb7701500002af2e8bfeb.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>JAIME SALDARRIAGA via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>A woman walks past the rubble of a collapsed building after an earthquake in Pereira, Colombia, on Aug. 11, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also well-documented cognitive effects, including recency bias and the \u2018frequency illusion,\u2019 that can make something seem more common once it has captured our attention,\u201d Bohan added.<\/p>\n<p>Recency bias happens when we ascribe more importance to recent events than to older, long-term data. Frequency illusion, also known as the Baader\u2013Meinhof phenomenon, occurs when you notice a specific phenomenon more frequently after recently becoming aware of it.<\/p>\n<p>Bohon says mental biases like these are why long-term statistics are so useful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur perception may be that earthquake activity is increasing, but the data allow us to step back and ask whether that is actually happening,\u201d she said. \u201cRight now, we are not seeing evidence of an unusual global increase in large earthquakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Improved monitoring and instant news and social media coverage may also make earthquake activity feel more frequent, said Lingsen Meng, a professor of geophysics at the University of California, Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no convincing evidence that earthquakes are becoming more frequent globally, though,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-sized__img landscape\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" alt=\"Part of the Yatsushiro Shrine collapsed after an earthquake struck the area, in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, on July 29, 2026.\" width=\"719\" height=\"479\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6a7cf0d9160000bff82fc9e8.jpeg\" \/>Part of the Yatsushiro Shrine collapsed after an earthquake struck the area, in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, on July 29, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>When earthquakes are related, it\u2019s typically because of aftershocks \u2014 smaller earthquakes that occur in the same general area in the days to years following a larger event, or \u201cmainshock.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>There are also cases of earthquake clusters caused by induced seismicity \u2014 earthquakes and tremors triggered by human activity that alters the stresses and strains in Earth\u2019s crust, according to William D. Barnhart, an assistant coordinator in the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is, earthquakes are happening all the time; most of us just don\u2019t notice because they\u2019re out in the middle of the ocean or in remote areas, rather than the densely populated areas that have been hit recently. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a magnitude 7 on Earth about once every three to four weeks, but the vast majority of these are unfelt or do not cause damage,\u201d Barnhart said.<\/p>\n<p>We still need to prepare for \u201cThe Big One.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All this said, U.S. scientists agree that we\u2019re due for <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/story\/big-earthquake-california-san-andreas-fault-could-hit-sooner-later-study-suggests\/19616941\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"\u201cThe Big One.\u201d\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/story\/big-earthquake-california-san-andreas-fault-could-hit-sooner-later-study-suggests\/19616941\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cThe Big One.\u201d<\/a> In California, that would likely be a massive earthquake along the San Andreas Fault. The Pacific Northwest is also due for a megathrust earthquake along the <a href=\"https:\/\/pnsn.org\/education\/pnw-earthquakes\/sources\/cascadia\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Cascadia Subduction Zone.\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/pnsn.org\/education\/pnw-earthquakes\/sources\/cascadia\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cascadia Subduction Zone.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though it\u2019s difficult to predict when that will happen, the most recent research shows that tectonic stress along the southern portion of the fault has reached<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-07-17\/san-andreas-fault-at-highest-earthquake-strain-in-1-000-years-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\" its highest level in 1,000 years\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-07-17\/san-andreas-fault-at-highest-earthquake-strain-in-1-000-years-study-finds\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> its highest level in 1,000 years<\/a>, raising concerns about a potential magnitude 7.8 or greater rupture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next magnitude 7 or higher earthquake might very well happen in California \u2015 on the San Andreas or the Hayward or the San Jacinto or on any of the many faults that rupture right across or close by major population areas,\u201d said Ahmed Elbanna, a professor of earth sciences and civil and environmental engineering at the University of Southern California. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the U.S., we watch these events around the globe and think we are different and we will fare better,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s true that we have made strides in seismic design and construction practices, but we have lots of vulnerabilities, many still lingering from before the 1994 magnitude <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/el\/earthquake-northridge-california-1994\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"6.8 Northridge earthquake\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/el\/earthquake-northridge-california-1994\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">6.8 Northridge earthquake<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the damage and loss of life that we have seen in Venezuela, Japan, and Colombia, Elbanna said he\u2019s concerned about the impact of a similarly catastrophic event at home.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-sized__img landscape\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" alt=\"The most recent research shows that tectonic stress along the southern portion of the San Andreas fault line has reached its highest level in 1,000 years, raising concerns about a potential magnitude 7.8 or greater rupture.\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6a7cf0741500002f01e8c01d.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>David McNew via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The most recent research shows that tectonic stress along the southern portion of the San Andreas fault line has reached its highest level in 1,000 years, raising concerns about a potential magnitude 7.8 or greater rupture.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweathernetwork.com\/en\/news\/science\/explainers\/why-are-earthquakes-so-hard-to-predict\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"earthquakes are hard to predict\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.theweathernetwork.com\/en\/news\/science\/explainers\/why-are-earthquakes-so-hard-to-predict\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">earthquakes are hard to predict<\/a> because deep underground conditions are hidden, tectonic movements are miniscule, and fault rocks react differently to stress and heat. But there\u2019s another hindrance to monitoring now: Trump-era budget cuts to scientific research.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/20\/climate\/volcanoes-earthquakes-tsunamis-federal-cuts-dg\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"As CNN reported last year\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/20\/climate\/volcanoes-earthquakes-tsunamis-federal-cuts-dg\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">As CNN reported last year<\/a>, a network of roughly 800 seismographs across the Western United States serves as a critical line of defense. These ground-motion sensors detect early shifts beneath the Earth\u2019s surface, helping scientists monitor seismic activity and assess the threat of major earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p>Teams of USGS scientists typically head out each summer to repair broken instruments, but that work has become more difficult as the Trump administration has sharply cut the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/20\/climate\/volcanoes-earthquakes-tsunamis-federal-cuts-dg\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"workforces of federal science agencies\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/20\/climate\/volcanoes-earthquakes-tsunamis-federal-cuts-dg\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">workforces of federal science agencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impacts will not be seen immediately but will become increasingly severe,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/eeps.washu.edu\/people\/michael-e-wysession\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Michael Wysession\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"6a7ca15fe4b0ecad6d3dde72\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/eeps.washu.edu\/people\/michael-e-wysession\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"11\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michael Wysession<\/a>, a professor of earth and planetary sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, told HuffPost. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a marathon, not a sprint, with monitoring Earth processes, and we\u2019re now trying to run on one leg,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>For people living in earthquake-prone areas, the recent string of earthquakes and scientists\u2019 concerns about budget cuts are a reminder that natural hazards are a fact of life \u2015 and that preparedness matters, Bohan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave an emergency plan, keep emergency supplies available, and know the recommended protective action where you live,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"This summer has brought no shortage of earthquakes.
