{"id":854300,"date":"2026-08-13T23:16:15","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T23:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/854300\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T23:16:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T23:16:15","slug":"bird-flu-detection-at-narooma-sparks-fear-for-upcoming-tourist-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/854300\/","title":{"rendered":"Bird flu detection at Narooma sparks fear for upcoming tourist season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Businesses on the NSW south coast are worried that tourism could be impacted following the first local detection of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A sample from a greater crested tern that was found dead on Bar Beach in Narooma was confirmed to have tested positive on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The coastal town&#8217;s economy relies on tourism in the spring and summer months, including boat tours out to the neighbouring Barunguba Montague Island, nine kilometres offshore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The island is a national park reserve where over 90 species of birds nest during spring, ranging from little penguins to greater crested terns and endangered species such as Gould&#8217;s petrels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When open, people can easily visit, stay overnight and swim with Australian and New Zealand fur seals and long-nosed seals that live on the island \u2014 species that have previously been <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-08-05\/bird-flu-hundreds-of-species-under-threat\/106998490\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106998490\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vulnerable to avian influenza outbreaks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Lady standing next to coffee machine\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/bd6a1237c00244e901a86eb33cf0efed.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sally Bouckley owns a tourism company in the middle of Narooma. (ABC News: Mikayla McGuirk-Scolaro)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Narooma tour operator Sally Bouckley said if bird flu spreads to the island, there could be a &#8220;massive&#8221; impact on the local economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s the number one tourism experience in Narooma,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We rely heavily on tourism. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Carlisle said the coming influx of migratory bird populations looking to nest on the island in September meant there was an increased chance of bird flu making its way there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If H5N1 is detected on Barunguba Montague Island, I&#8217;d be really surprised if any tours go on,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Powell said that if a risk such as sustained transmission on the mainland was identified, a decision could be made to restrict public access through biosecurity orders.<\/p>\n<p>More communication with the public<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Across Bar Beach, signs have been put up informing the public to keep their distance from any sick or dead birds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">For Eurobodalla Shire Mayor Mathew Hatcher, the detection was &#8220;always a when, not an if.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A sign\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/0e16554824f620d4d19d10ef9183ed4f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Biosecurity warning signs have been installed at Bar Beach in Narooma.
