Former boxing<\/a> prodigy Prichard Colon has died aged 33, more than a decade after suffering a serious brain injury in a bout.<\/p>\n

During a 2015 fight with Terrel Williams, he was repeatedly struck in the back of the head, resulting in a subdural haematoma and undergoing emergency surgery.<\/p>\n

Colon was in a coma for 221 days and lived the rest of his life with brain damage.<\/p>\n

Videos shared online by his mother in 2018 showed the Puerto Rican fighter undergoing physical therapy while responding to verbal commands. <\/p>\n

The family filed a lawsuit on Colon\u2019s behalf, seeking up to $71 million AUD in damages from the ringside doctor for his handling of the fight. <\/p>\n

The referee has also copped criticism for his role in the incident. At the time, Colon informed him about the illegal blows, but was told to \u201ctake care of it\u201d himself.<\/p>\n

Colon\u2019s father confirmed the news of his passing on Friday (AEST).<\/p>\n

A talented young amateur boxer, Colon found success at the 2010 Pan-American Youth Championship, winning a gold medal in the 64kg weight class.<\/p>\n

He attempted to qualify for the 2012 Olympics but missed out on selection, before turning his attention to the professional circuit.<\/p>\n

Colon held a perfect 16-0 record before the fight with Williams. He officially lost via disqualification after his corner took his gloves off at the end of the ninth round.<\/p>\n

Tributes flowed for Colon on social media following the news of his passing.<\/p>\n

\u201cRest in peace, Prichard,\u201d boxing promoter Lou DiBella said via X. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat an awful tragedy his injury was; a reminder of the incredible risks associated with boxing and the darkness those risks can bring. <\/p>\n

\u201cMy thoughts go to his loving and dedicated family, who did everything they could to extend his life and bring him moments of joy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official DAZN Boxing account posted: \u201cA true warrior whose strength touched and inspired so many. Our deepest condolences.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official WBO account also shared a tribute.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe WBO family mourns the passing of Prichard Col\u00f3n, whose courage, strength, and fighting spirit transcended the ring.
