The car was not quite right, the tyres went away, the balance changed, there was understeer on entry or traffic arrived at the wrong moment. Increasingly, though, the data knows better, and artificial intelligence is making it much harder to disguise exactly where the time is being lost.

Teams have been recording throttle position, brake pressure, steering angle, speed and dozens of other parameters for decades. What is changing is their ability to interrogate enormous volumes of that information almost instantly. Instead of an engineer studying a handful of laps and telling a driver they are losing time through Turn 8, a machine-learning system can sift through thousands of laps and begin to explain why.

A driver might, for example, start braking a little earlier as the tyres go off, without really noticing the change himself. Another might be giving away time with a steering input that only shows up in certain corners, or getting back to the throttle in a way that works early in a stint but hurts later on. On one lap it may amount to almost nothing, but keep doing it for 20 or 30 laps and suddenly there is a meaningful chunk of race time missing.

The uncomfortable part for drivers is that the computer does not care about reputation. It does not know who has won championships, who has the biggest contract or who has spent years being regarded as brilliant in a particular type of corner. It simply sees patterns, and in some categories those patterns are already available not just within a team, but across the field.

Ross Chastain looks over the data at Watkins Glen. NASCAR teams can compare driver inputs and positioning across the field, making it increasingly difficult for a technique, weakness or performance gain to remain hidden. Image: GettyImages

NASCAR offers one of the clearest examples through the SMT Team Analytics platform, which allows teams to access telemetry and positioning information from rival cars and compare performance corner by corner and lap by lap. A breakthrough discovered by one driver during a weekend can therefore quickly become visible to everyone else. A better line, a different braking technique or a more effective way of managing the throttle can be copied much faster than it once was.

That has helped close the field, but it has also changed the value of a driver’s individual discovery. Something that might once have remained an advantage for weeks can now be exposed within a race weekend. The same information that helps one driver improve also gives every competitor the chance to do exactly the same thing.

Artificial intelligence pushes that idea further because the benchmark no longer has to be the driver on the other side of the garage. With enough historical data, a driver can theoretically be compared against years of their own performances or against another competitor entirely. Imagine quantifying exactly how Shane van Gisbergen altered his technique when moving from Supercars to NASCAR, identifying which habits transferred successfully and which ones had to be unlearned.

The next frontier is the driver rather than the car. Formula 1 already uses sensor-equipped gloves capable of monitoring vital signs for medical purposes, while eye-tracking technology is increasingly familiar in driver development and simulator programs. Add those data streams to machine learning and the analysis becomes far more personal.

Teams can begin examining where a driver is looking, how reaction times change late in a race, whether fatigue is affecting decision-making and whether physiological responses alter under pressure. Measured over hundreds of laps, starts and race situations, qualities once described largely through instinct and observation can start becoming measurable trends. For the driver, that creates another layer of performance that can be analysed, compared and questioned.

None of this makes the great racing driver less important. In many ways, it does the opposite, because if technology can explain most of what makes a lap fast, the part that remains unexplained becomes even more valuable. Instinct, racecraft, feel, courage and the ability to process chaos may become the qualities that separate the exceptional from the merely very good.

The big change is that drivers can now be shown exactly where the time is going. A habit that once might have been put down to feel or circumstance can be checked against lap after lap of data, and if the same pattern keeps appearing, it becomes pretty hard to argue with.

The machine may not be coming for the driver’s seat. But it is becoming very good at removing the excuses.

In the latest Auto Action Premium, we investigate the AI race already reshaping motorsport, from driver analysis and Formula 1 strategy models to digital twins, racecar design and the Australian pitlane, and ask where the human still holds the decisive advantage.

Recent Storiesarray (
0 =>
WP_Term::__set_state(array(
‘term_id’ => 19,
‘name’ => ‘About AA’,
‘slug’ => ‘about-aa’,
‘term_group’ => 0,
‘term_taxonomy_id’ => 19,
‘taxonomy’ => ‘category’,
‘description’ => ”,
‘parent’ => 0,
‘count’ => 82,
‘filter’ => ‘raw’,
‘cat_ID’ => 19,
‘category_count’ => 82,
‘category_description’ => ”,
‘cat_name’ => ‘About AA’,
‘category_nicename’ => ‘about-aa’,
‘category_parent’ => 0,
)),
1 =>
WP_Term::__set_state(array(
‘term_id’ => 37,
‘name’ => ‘F1’,
‘slug’ => ‘f1’,
‘term_group’ => 0,
‘term_taxonomy_id’ => 37,
‘taxonomy’ => ‘category’,
‘description’ => ‘An Introduction to Formula One (F1)
Formula One, or F1, is the highest class of single-seater auto racing, governed by the Fédération Internationale de l\\’Automobile (FIA) and is owned by Liberty Media. The name “Formula One” refers to the set of rules or formula that all cars and drivers must comply with.

The F1 season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix, held on purpose-built circuits or public roads around the world. The results of each race are combined to determine two annual championships: one for drivers and one for constructors (teams).

The history of Formula One can be traced back to the pre-war Grand Prix racing, which featured open-wheel cars with supercharged engines. The first World Championship of Drivers was organised by the FIA in 1950, following the end of World War II. The first race was held at Silverstone, England, and was won by Giuseppe Farina, driving an Alfa Romeo. The first constructors\\’ championship was introduced in 1958 and was won by Vanwall.

Formula One has seen many changes and innovations over the years, both in terms of technology and regulations. Some of the most notable developments include the introduction of rear-engined cars in the late 1950s, the use of aerodynamic wings in the late 1960s, the adoption of turbocharged engines in the late 1970s, the emergence of electronic driver aids in the late 1980s, the switch to V10 and then V8 engines in the 1990s and 2000s, and the introduction of hybrid power units in 2014.

Formula One has also produced some of the greatest drivers and rivalries in the history of motorsport. Some of the most famous names include Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, and Sebastian Vettel. Some of the most intense battles for the championship have been between Fangio and Stirling Moss in the 1950s, Lauda and James Hunt in the 1970s, Senna and Prost in the late 1980s, Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen in the late 1990s, and Hamilton and Vettel in the 2010s.

Formula One is widely regarded as the pinnacle of motorsport, attracting millions of fans and viewers worldwide. The sport is also a huge business, involving billions of dollars in revenue and expenditure. The teams compete for prize money, sponsorship deals, and media rights, while the drivers earn millions of dollars in salaries and endorsements. The sport is also influenced by politics, regulations, and controversies, such as doping scandals, espionage cases, safety issues, and environmental concerns.

The following is a list of all F1 World Drivers Champions by year, from 1950 to 2020:
1950-1959
1950: Giuseppe Farina (Italy) – Some of the most notable developments include the introduction of rear-engined cars in the late 1950s, the use of aerodynamic wings in the late 1960s, the adoption of turbocharged engines in the late 1970s, the emergence of electronic driver aids in the late 1980s, the switch to V10 and then V8 engines in the 1990s and 2000s, and the introduction of hybrid power units in 2014.

1950-1959
1950: Giuseppe Farina (Italy) –
