{"id":854808,"date":"2026-08-14T09:18:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T09:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/854808\/"},"modified":"2026-08-14T09:18:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T09:18:17","slug":"when-an-expedition-team-went-to-the-falkland-islands-a-group-of-curious-animals-surrounded-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/854808\/","title":{"rendered":"When an expedition team went to the Falkland Islands, a group of curious animals surrounded them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In spring 2025, after returning from an expedition to the\u00a0Falkland Islands\u00a0(Islas Malvinas) in the South Atlantic Ocean, researchers shared footage of their adorable encounter with a group of\u00a0king penguins\u00a0on the shoreline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The video shows tens of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/facts-about-king-penguins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">king penguins<\/a> (Aptenodytes patagonicus), with their characteristic orange cheeks, strutting along with their arms outstretched.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Growing up to\u00a095cm\u00a0tall,\u00a0king penguins\u00a0are the second largest species of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/facts-about-penguins\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">penguin<\/a>. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/emperor-penguin-guide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">emperor penguin<\/a>\u00a0takes the crown for the largest, measuring\u00a0120cm.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs perfect waves rolled in offshore, the penguins \u2013 one by one \u2013 debated whether to brave the frigid waters in search of food. Inland, hundreds more gathered with chicks of all sizes, preparing for the winter ahead,\u201d said Andi Cross, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edgesofearth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Edges of Earth<\/a>\u00a0expedition leader.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>See the Edges of Earth expedition meeting the king penguin colony. They passed right in front of the expedition team and even peered at some of their gear \u201cbefore giving a trademark side-eye and waddling off,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The explorers were visiting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/falklandsconservation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Falklands Conservation<\/a>\u00a0to learn how these animals are adapting to a changing climate. \u201cWith climate change reshaping the Falklands like everywhere else, shifting weather patterns \u2013 stronger winds, heavier rain, and early snow \u2013 are making survival increasingly difficult,\u201d said Cross.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Top image: Falkland Islands.
