Tournament director Stefan Wilson says tennis fans can expect a high‑quality and fiercely competitive spectacle when the inaugural Kingston Open Tennis Championships, an ATP Challenger event, serves off tomorrow at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston.

The tournament will be staged in two phases, August 16‑22 and August 23‑29, with each leg offering US$107,000 in prize money.

Wilson said he is pleased with the calibre of players committed to the event, noting that several highly ranked competitors and Grand Slam winners will feature.

“I am feeling pretty good about this one because we have a very strong lineup with two Grand Slam doubles champions in there, and some of these persons were very popular, so it is definitely going to be an exciting week,” Wilson said.

Strong field

The tournament will be headlined by France’s Valentin Royer (No. 78), Brazil’s Gustavo Heide (No. 134), and Spain’s Pedro Martinez (No. 148). Wilson added that the timing of the event, just ahead of the US Open, has helped attract a strong field.

“A lot of players are very excited to come to Jamaica for the first time and they are curious about what the weather has to offer and how the courts play,” he said. “More or less, they just really want to come here and play some good tennis and then head off to the US Open.”

Wilson noted that the Kingston Open is one of only five ATP tournaments being staged across the Western Hemisphere during this period, making it an important stop for players seeking valuable ranking points.

“The players will get valuable ATP points to get into the US Open if they are going to play the qualifiers or try to get into the main draw,” he said. “It is pretty big because there are only five ATP tournaments across the Western Hemisphere during this time of the year and Jamaica is one of them, and so it is going to be very competitive.”

Interest in the event is already surging, with accommodation demand exceeding initial expectations.

“Right now we don’t have enough hotel rooms because we have the Jamaica Pegasus and Courtleigh as our official hotels, and we are adding other hotels as options for players and their families and coaches to stay, so it is a lot,” Wilson said. “We even have persons from Miami who will be flying in to watch the tournament.”

Jamaica’s top‑ranked player Blaise Bicknell will lead the local challenge, while John Chin and Nicholas Gore are set to compete in the qualifying draw alongside several other Caribbean players.

“We have our number one player, Blaise Bicknell, and he is very unpredictable where that is concerned, and we expect that he will be able to reach very far in the tournament. He will also have the home crowd behind him and he also seems to be in pretty decent form coming from his injuries last year, and so he should be fine,” Wilson said.

He added that the Kingston Open represents a rare opportunity for local fans to witness world‑class tennis.

“This is huge and it is one chance that you are going to get this year to see some top‑class tennis with some great players, and so everyone should come out and support this event,” he said. “We are going to have about 1,200 capacity at max, so people need to get their tickets early.”

Tournament director Stefan Wilson says tennis fans can expect a high‑quality and fiercely competitive spectacle when the inaugural…

[565
64,63,85,747
post-855826","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-tennis","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-sports","tag-tennis
["GET
