Nintendo’s own numbers say otherwise. According to financial results published on August 6, 2026, the Switch 2 has now sold 23.68 million units worldwide, a tally confirmed by Nintendo Life to have surpassed the GameCube’s entire lifetime total of 21.74 million units in roughly thirteen months on shelves.

That milestone lands in the middle of a debate that has followed Nintendo since the Switch 2’s reveal in April 2025, when former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida argued the console was diluting the brand’s identity. The timing makes the sales data a useful reality check on whether Kyoto’s “more of the same, but better” strategy is actually costing it anything.

Switch 2 Overtakes GameCube’s Lifetime Total in 13 Months

Nintendo’s Q1 FY2027 filing, covering April through June 2026, shows Nintendo Switch 2 hardware maintained strong sales momentum, with sales totaling 3.82 million units for the quarter. That’s a year-on-year decline, but Video Games Chronicle notes the drop is being measured against the console’s blockbuster launch window rather than a genuine slowdown, reporting that Switch 2 shipped another 3.82 million units, now over 23.68 million units in 13 months, making it the fastest selling Nintendo console after 5 quarters.

Regionally, Nintendo’s disclosures show the console’s spread is genuinely global: as of the end of June 2026, Nintendo has sold 6.7 million Switch 2 units in Japan, 7.95 million in the Americas, 5.37 million in Europe and 3.66 in other regions. On the software side, titles such as Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, released in May, and Star Fox, released in June, performed steadily, and Pokémon Pokopia, released in the previous fiscal year, also sold well, pushing Switch 2 software sales past 9 million units for the quarter alone.

Yoshida’s “Losing Their Identity” Critique, and Nintendo’s Answer

The “soul” question traces back most directly to Shuhei Yoshida, who left PlayStation in early 2025 after three decades with Sony. Reacting to the Switch 2 reveal, he told the Easy Allies podcast that Yoshida left PlayStation in early 2025 after 30 years with the company before delivering his verdict: “In a sense, I think Nintendo is losing their identity, in my opinion… For me, they are always about creating some new experience, like designing hardware and games together to create something, [an] amazing new experience. But Switch 2, as we all anticipated, is a better Switch, right?”

Nintendo didn’t dodge the criticism. In the company’s own “Ask the Developer” interview series, Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta, who previously served as technical director on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, addressed the shift away from gimmick-driven hardware head-on. Dohta explained on Nintendo’s official site that his honest opinion as a software developer is that just because a new hardware feature is added, it doesn’t necessarily mean that various problems will be solved or that new kinds of gameplay experiences will be created one after another, so with Switch 2, the team improved processing speed in the hope that it’ll become a dedicated game platform with a strong and solid foundation that allows software developers to create what they want. GameSpot also reported that fellow Switch 2 designer Tetsuya Sasaki said the name “Switch 2” is “simple and easy to understand,” adding that it was always the plan for the system to be a “proper successor to Switch,” so keeping the same name made sense.

A Packed Late-2026 Slate Argues Against Creative Stagnation

If Nintendo’s identity were genuinely fading, its upcoming release calendar would be the place to notice it. Instead, Nintendo’s own financial statement lists a run of first-party titles still to come this year, confirming the Nintendo Switch 2 software lineup added Splatoon Raiders in July, and titles scheduled for release include Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave in September, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort in October, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time also in 2026. Meanwhile the original Switch, now seven years into its life, keeps finding new audiences: Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, released in April, has shown strong growth with sales reaching 7.94 million units, a title Video Games Chronicle separately confirmed had sold more than 8 million units as of August 5.

Read also: Pokémon Pokopia Tops 5 Million Sales as Expansion Pass DLC Rolls Out

Australia and New Zealand Face a Steeper Price Tag From September 1

Local fans weighing up whether the “soul” is intact will feel the cost side of this story most directly. Nintendo Australia has confirmed that beginning on 1st September 2026, Nintendo Australia will revise the SRP of the Nintendo Switch 2 console in Australia from AU$699.95 to AU$769.95, and in New Zealand from NZ$799.95 to NZ$969.95. Nintendo’s statement attributed the change to various changes in market conditions, which are expected to extend over the medium to long term, while stressing that pricing for the Nintendo Switch console is not changing.

For Kiwi and Australian shoppers still on the fence, that gives a hard deadline: buy before the switch-over date or absorb the increase. It’s a reminder that whatever creative debates play out online, the more immediate “soul” test for many households in this region will be the hip-pocket one.

Taken together, the numbers tell a more complicated story than either side of the “soul” debate wants to admit. Nintendo isn’t chasing motion wands or dual screens this generation, and Yoshida’s critique about a shift toward iterative hardware isn’t wrong on its face. But a console outselling the GameCube’s entire run in a third of the time, backed by a first-party release schedule running through Zelda, Fire Emblem and Splatoon, suggests whatever Nintendo is doing with Switch 2 is still resonating with the audience that matters most: the one buying the games.

Sources

Every time Nintendo ships new hardware, the same question resurfaces online: has the company lost its soul?
