A duck is probably the last thing that springs to mind when you look at Ally Langdon<\/a>\u2019s Logies<\/a> gown, but it\u2019s the image designer Nicky Apostolopoulos uses to explain its deceptive simplicity.<\/p>\n

\u201cA duck on top of the water is just cruising along, but underneath, its feet…\u201d she laughs, miming frenzied paddling with her hands.<\/p>\n

At first glance, the A Current Affair<\/a> host\u2019s Velani<\/a> dress \u2013 a bronze halter-neck sheath with lattice-like crystal and bugle bead embellishment \u2013 does give the air of \u2018effortless\u2019, but there\u2019s more than meets the eye.<\/p>\n

\u201cNicky [says] a simple dress is often the most tricky one to make,\u201d Langdon tells nine.com.au.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder all that sparkling material you see, there is so much work, there is so much boning. I\u2019m feeling very secure in there. It\u2019s not going anywhere!\u201d<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve accompanied Langdon for her final fitting at the Velani atelier in Five Dock, Sydney, with four days \u2013 and some final finishing touches from the designer and team members Lucia, Laura and Rita \u2013 left before the ceremony.<\/p>\n

The sparkling gown has been a collaboration between Apostolopoulos and Beck Wilson, senior Nine Network stylist, who had a clear vision: metallics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gold, silver and bronze materials were considered, but, as the Velani founder puts it, \u201cthis is the one that spoke our love language\u201d.<\/p>\n

Langdon is thrilled by the result, but admits she\u2019s happily taken a back seat during the ideation process.<\/p>\n

\u201cI play to my strengths, and this is not mine … I just zip my mouth and let the professionals do their job,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t need to be getting in their way and messing with whatever they\u2019re doing. Between the two of them, I know I\u2019m in really safe hands.\u201d<\/p>\n

That said, the journalist knows what she likes and doesn\u2019t like, and this material \u201cjumped out\u201d when she was browsing the swatches.<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved it, I connected to it, there\u2019s a beautiful bronze in it that I adore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just zip my mouth and let the professionals do their job,\u201d Langdon says of her involvement in the design process.\u00a0Nine.com.au\/Isabela Gonzalez<\/p>\n

The crystals and beads on the dress, which Apostolopoulos says number in the thousands, give it incredible sparkle \u2013 as evidenced in the afternoon light streaming into Velani HQ.<\/p>\n

However, they also add a physical challenge.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so heavy, people don\u2019t realise. They\u2019ll say, \u2018She\u2019s got a simple dress on\u2019 but there\u2019s some serious weight on this,\u201d Apostolopoulos says, explaining the gown\u2019s internal corsetry is crucial in counteracting this.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnderneath it\u2019s quite structured to be able to hold the weight of the embellishment … The fabric is meticulously draped over with minimal seaming, so it can look effortless.\u201d<\/p>\n

The couturier describes the outfit as \u201cchic, sophisticated and very elevated\u201d, and says Langdon looks \u201cabsolutely incredible\u201d in it.<\/p>\n

Langdon says she feels \u201ca million bucks\u201d in the dress, but even more importantly, she knows she can walk and move in it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Nicky and her team do is so exquisite, but it\u2019s also really comfortable,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you know you\u2019re going to be putting on the dress at 3 in the afternoon, and you\u2019re still going to be wearing it nearly 12 hours later, that\u2019s critical.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, she and Apostolopoulos acknowledge there is one practical challenge presented by the outfit, and it\u2019s one many Logies attendees are likely to face.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know I\u2019m sitting here thinking, \u2018How do I pee in this thing?\u2019 That is a problem for the night,\u201d the journalist quips.<\/p>\n

Apostolopoulos agrees it\u2019s a \u201clegit\u201d question, suggesting she bring someone with her to the bathroom.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s going above and beyond friendship, but that\u2019s OK,\u201d Langdon laughs, \u201cThat\u2019s what we do on Logies night.\u201d<\/p>\n
