An Adelaide<\/a> woman is demanding answers from SA<\/a> Health after a distressing experience at Lyell McEwin Hospital, where she claims she was refused entry to see her sick grandmother as the elderly dementia patient lay alone in a corridor.<\/p>\n

Katie Hoskin received a call on Saturday morning telling her that her 92-year-old grandmother Patricia Constable had been rushed to the hospital after a suspected stroke.<\/p>\n

\u201c[I] got the kids ready, got to the hospital about 8.30,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

But when Hoskin arrived, she wasn\u2019t allowed to see Constable.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re like, \u2018well, no, you can\u2019t see her because she\u2019s in the corridor\u2019,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

After breaking down, Hoskin was eventually let through, but was told she could only see her grandmother for two minutes.<\/p>\n

Constable has advanced Alzheimer\u2019s and can\u2019t speak for herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe can\u2019t tell you if something\u2019s wrong. You can only visually assess,\u201d Hoskin said.<\/p>\n

Having worked as a nurse, Hoskin says she\u2019s seen firsthand what can happen when elderly patients don\u2019t have an advocate.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf she did start choking or she did just slip away, is anyone going to see her?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The incident comes after 64-year-old Helen Sargent died in October last year<\/a> after being admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with breathing difficulties. She, too, was left waiting in a corridor.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt hurt. It hurt because that does go through your mind,\u201d Hoskin said.<\/p>\n

She is now sharing her story to help shine a light on the healthcare system and hopefully prevent others from slipping through the cracks.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo better,\u201d she said. \u201cJust step back a bit. We\u2019re just people and we want to see our loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

SA Health has apologised and says it\u2019s now actively investigating the matter, adding it is now contacting her family to discuss their concerns, though Hoskin says she\u2019s still yet to receive that call.<\/p>\n

Constable is still waiting for an official diagnosis and remains in hospital as she works to recover.<\/p>\n
