{"id":857677,"date":"2026-08-16T20:46:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-16T20:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/857677\/"},"modified":"2026-08-16T20:46:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T20:46:08","slug":"summit-high-boys-golf-team-teed-up-for-competitive-season-facing-challenging-front-range-opponents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/857677\/","title":{"rendered":"Summit High boys golf team teed up for competitive season, facing challenging Front Range opponents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Summit High School\u2019s fall sports have officially kicked off ahead of the 2026-2027 school year, which begins Wednesday, Aug. 19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the high school\u2019s first teams to start its season is the boys golf team, which hosted tryouts on Aug. 3. Later this month, the Tigers will compete in their first official tournament at the Overland Park Golf Course in Denver on Aug. 24.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on what we\u2019ve seen over the last two weeks, especially with the older boys that are much more seasoned in the tournament realm, I think they\u2019re going to be in a good place,\u201d head coach Zach Dobrota said of this season\u2019s roster.<\/p>\n<p>The team is made up of 15 boys from all four grade levels \u2014 two freshmen, four sophomores, four juniors and five seniors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got some seniors that I expect big things from. I think they expect big things from themselves, which is good to see,\u201d Dobrota said. \u201cParker Gray, who\u2019s your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/summit-golf-team-qualifies-2-athletes-to-state-tournament\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">returning state qualifier from last year<\/a>, Hunter Plummer, who\u2019s a senior who narrowly missed the state tournament last year, Sawyer Coffman, who is gunning for a state berth, and I think he\u2019s got it in him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All three of these golfers have \u201cexpressed interest in playing at the next level,\u201d after their high school careers are finished, according to Dobrota.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other standout players to watch include Jack Tobias, Jagger Roberts, Jaxx Roberts and Fisher Woodard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of these boys have a very strong chance if they can make their game peak at the right time,\u201d Dobrota said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With a talented and overall closely-matched team this season, playing time isn\u2019t guaranteed, Dobrota explained. Every tournament\u2019s roster will look different, requiring the golfers to play their best to earn the chance to participate in more tournaments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of firepower on this golf team right now,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be not only competitive during tournament play, it\u2019s going to be competitive throughout the season to just get yourself a tournament berth. It\u2019s anybody\u2019s game out here for the most part with the team that we built.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the upcoming season, the boys will primarily travel to tournaments in the eastern half of the state, where there are more golfing facilities and longer seasons than in the High Country. Because of this, Front Range high schools will bring the Tigers some of their strongest competition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a little bit different down there just because of proximity to golf courses and more facilities and more schools,\u201d Dobrota said. \u201cThere are a lot of very strong golfers that live on the Front Range that have practically year-round golf seasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One Front Range tournament, hosted at the Air Force Academy\u2019s Eisenhower Golf Club in Colorado Springs, will pose a particularly tough challenge for the Tigers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Eisenhower Blue course \u2026 arguably has some of the toughest greens in the country, definitely in the state. These boys are definitely going to get tested in their ability to manage their short game and how well they putt,\u201d Dobrota said. \u201cWe will play some of the best teams in the state there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other tough events for Summit High include a tournament hosted at the Collindale Golf Course in Fort Collins, which regularly hosts U.S. Open qualifiers, and a home tournament, hosted in Keystone, which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitdaily.com\/news\/summit-high-school-golf-team-victorious-at-home-tournament\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tigers won last year<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeptember 10, the boys get to play a home event in front of their families, and we\u2019ve stacked the field there too,\u201d Dobrota said. \u201cSo it\u2019ll be a little bit more difficult than it\u2019s ever been, and hopefully we can turn around and repeat winning our home event again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a competitive season ahead both internally and against other high schools, Dobrota explained that his golfers will need to focus on keeping a positive mindset.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited to see the physical talent mesh with who can be mentally tough,\u201d he said. \u201cWe all have bad holes. We blow up, or sometimes, the other way, you birdie a couple holes and you get overly confident.
